Most themes, if not all the commonly used ones, can handle blocks on either side, and there is no way to see the preview without saving and seeing the results on the site. The preview tab is unnecessary.

It is needed if you have block which:

  • Do not display without content
  • Only display on specific pages (via path restriction)
  • Can be disabled by the user on the user page (admin)

In these cases, blocks might be missing in the actual view, but they are present in the preview. So if you need to see the block placement with all blocks, then it is the only option.

I have no strong feelings about this patch -- to be honest, I haven't used the block preview once in the past two years.

Goba appears to thumb this down, while drumm (obviously) thumbs this up. What do the others think? Without additional feedback, I'm going to mark this 'postponed'.

To be honest I don't need the preview, I just pointed out possible use cases when it might be useful for someone.
