In the User Guide we mention, "The Basic page content type must exist. This is created on your site when you install with the core Standard installation profile" but there's no mention or explanation of "content types" in section 5 beforehand. I think adding a sentence that explains that content types are the list of items displayed in the "create content" are all "content types" would be helpful.
The only other spot I've seen content types mentioned in the user guide was in section 2.3, there's a quick example from the market site, but no explanation is given around them until section 6.1 where the user is guided through creating one.

jhodgdonThanks very much for catching this problem!!!
Here is where we explain entity types, including content types:
https://www.drupal.org/docs/user_guide/en/planning-data-types.html
If you are on section 5.2
https://www.drupal.org/docs/user_guide/en/content-create.html
it should have this topic in the Prerequisite Knowledge section. That is definitely an oversight, and the correct fix. We are trying not to duplicate information, and trying not to mix topics between tasks and concepts.
So, here's a patch.
