I want to start the process for translating the User Guide to Simplified Chinese. I translated a lot for the Drupal Console Documentation to Simplified Chinese as the maintainer.

This issue is to track progress on setting up for translations into Simplified Chinese.

First things first, let me Explaining why I choose ZH-HANS as the LANGCODE, not two letters ZH in lower-case asked in the Guide. In the current source code of Drupal Core, below is the line 332 to 333 of the Core/Language/LanguageManager.php

'zh-hans' => array('Chinese, Simplified', '简体中文'),
'zh-hant' => array('Chinese, Traditional', '繁體中文')

The line 332 defined the langcode for our language, and the next line is for another language called Traditional Chinese. If we choose two letters ZH, what langcode for the Traditional Chinese.

Tasks

  1. [DONE] Add a new issue component for translations into this new language, by editing the Project page. The component should be called "ZH-HANS translation".
  2. [DONE] Make a new source/zh-hans directory. Copy all of the source (English) files, including the images subdirectory, into the new directory. Keep the file names and IDs the same as they were in English.
  3. [DONE] Add a new section to the attributions.txt file for the translation team management for this language. Template:
    ==== Translation into Simplified Chinese

    The Simplified Chinese translation of this guide was coordinated by:

    * https://www.drupal.org/u/person1[Person One]

    * https://www.drupal.org/u/person2[Person Two] of http://example.com[Company]

  4. [DONE] - Make a separate issue for the screenshots. See Guidelines document for issue template. See #2830624: [ZH-HANS] Simplified Chinese screenshots
  5. [DONE] Grant issue maintainer and VCS commit permissions to the manager or managers of the language team for the new language, by editing the Maintainers page for the project.
  6. [DONE] Make issues for translating each topic into the target language. There is a spreadsheet file scripts/bookmarks.fods that will aid in doing this.
  7. [DONE] Copy the English configuration file scripts/lang-en.conf to file name lang-lc.conf, where lc is the language code.
  8. [DONE] Add notes to the guide.txt #2832681: [ZH-HANS] 翻译文件: guide.txt and glossary.txt #2832784: [ZH-HANS] 翻译文件: glossary.txt file translation issues: When the chapter headers for the Preface, Index, and Glossary sections are translated, the scripts/lang-lc.conf file translations of these same 3 words need to be done at the same time. Suggested note:
    When this translation is done, make sure to update the scripts/lang-lc.conf (for your language code) at the same time so the chapter headings for Preface, Index, and Glossary in that file match what is in the source file for this issue.

  9. [DONE] Add langcode to the build scripts in scripts/languages.txt, and verify that it builds without errors.
  10. Optional but recommended steps:
    • Make a translation glossary for this language. File scripts/TermsToTranslate.fods is a good starting point. This should be located in a place that the language team normally uses for communication, such as on localize.drupal.org. See https://localize.drupal.org/node/64075#terms
    • Make a shared spreadsheet (for example, using Google Sheets) to track translation progress. File scripts/bare_topic_names.csv is a good starting point; you can add columns for the issue URLs, and status of each issue. #2833901: [ZH-HANS] tracking translation progress
  11. Start translating!

Hi! I am happy that you are interested in translating the User Guide into Chinese. But it seems that the Drupal Core software translation should be a little bit more complete first -- see https://www.drupal.org/docs/user_guide_guidelines/pm-guide.html#pm-guide... -- localize.drupal.org reports that it is only about 63% translated.

The problem is that the instructions in the User Guide and the screenshots in the User Guide need to match what a user would see in the Drupal software user interface. So if the user interface is not showing mostly Chinese, the guide will need to be updated later when the user interface is fixed up.

So... I think maybe we should postpone this issue until Drupal Core is more translated?

(As a note, we are already working on the Catalan translation, which has a similar percentage, but when they started they had a higher percentage of the Core translation completed. There must have been some changes in a later version of Drupal Core.)

@jhodgdon, Thanks for your reply and help!

I checked again the status of the Drupal Core translation of Simplified Chinese at https://localize.drupal.org, Yes, It's 63.3%. But when I installed Drupal 8.2.3 locally with the standard profile and Simplified Chinese, it reports 5552/5683 (97.69%) translated. I do not understand why they are so different.

If the statistical data 97.69% is reliable, please make this issue forward.

Further more, I found that there are lots of suggestions pending to be approved. So I contacted the manager of the Simplified Translation team, and luckily got an admin role that I can review and approve those by myself. All I will do next is push it to a higher percentage, then back to this issue.

OK, that sounds good! Let's move forward. I will start on these tasks.

I have taken care of several things, see issue summary. Note that I also added an extra section to the issue summary (this section is not in the Guidelines document on drupal.org yet, but is in the source, and should be on drupal.org sometime soon).

The next steps are for the Chinese language team. Welcome to the project!

Simplifying instructions in that new section of the issue summary.

As I see the ZH-HANS component has been already added to the User Guide project could you please wait a couple of hours with the generation of issues, please? In a couple of hours I'll commit some improvements to the bookmarks.fods file, so Chinese translators can have more useful issue descriptions.

I will report here too when committed on #2786921: Make a solution for creating translation issues.

Thanks for your patience in advance.

See comment on other issue. You have the permission.

I am going to edit the issue template for "Set up new translation" issues so it has a note about needing to re-clone the repository, because you are the second team that had this same problem. :)

I've done my part... It looks pretty much done except maybe creating the issue to track all the translation issues, which is optional. So I will let the Chinese team mark it Fixed when they are ready. Happy translating!
