Learn about the many benefits of Drupal 10 and find migration tools in our resource center.On the installer screen (and possibly other places, given the code lives in LanguageManager) the choice for selecting the two variants of Norwegian is called "Bokmål" and "Nynorsk".
While this is not exactly wrong, it is confusing.
First of all, if I wanted to install it in Norwegian I would start to look in the alphabetical list under the letter N. Which is where (by coincidence, I might add) I find the least common of the two, leading me to look on B as alternative 2.
Second. The other languages with more than one variant (example - Portuguese) is listed under P as translated Portuguese ('Português, Brasil' and 'Português, Portugal').
For Norwegian it would be easier for the user (point 1) and more consistent if we listed the two alternatives as "Norsk, Bokmål" and "Norsk, Nynorsk".

XanoThe difference with languages like Tamil and Portuguese is that they are languages with different regional variants, rather than different languages that are only spoken in one country and are conveniently named after that country.
However, you make a good point that the current listing for the Norwegian languages is not consistent. Could you perhaps ask a few other Norwegians to comment on this issue and explain their point of view?

eiriksmYes, I have asked on our local forum for others to chime in. Also, for all I know, it could actually a be Norwegian that made a patch to name the languages the way I am trying to change now. :) So that point of view would also be interesting to hear.

wizonesolutions+1 to changing it. Unless those languages are the only choices, and you're already on a Norwegian site, you will never see them referred to that way. The way Eirik suggested is more common.
I tried to git blame it but it only shows alexpott, who created the file in 56f436 with some other contributors. But I saw a later commit by Gabor (committed by webchick), cb869a that synced the language list with localize.drupal.org. Maybe the root problem is on localize.drupal.org?

The capital letter used in "Norsk, Bokmål" and "Norsk, Nynorsk" is an English thing. What do you think, Eirik? I think my opinion is supported by the Norwegian language council - ref http://www.sprakradet.no/sprakhjelp/Skriveregler/Stor_eller_liten_forbok...
I have also seen "Norsk (bokmål)" and "Norsk (nynorsk)" used a lot, but I think it is counter intuitive to put the most important information in parenthesis ... One source recommending this form: http://i18n.skolelinux.no/kodar/sprak.html

eiriksmI agree with the first suggestion. Since both are used, we should probably go for the one that looks the most like other options in the select box. So here is an updated patch with the correct casing of "bokmål" and "nynorsk".
