As per this comment over on groups.drupal.org, here's a patch that clarifies how arguments placed in the path work. I spent a few hours breaking my brain on this one, so let's make sure no one else has to. :-) Patch is just a text string change, and is against the 4.7 version.

dayre CreditAttribution: dayre commentedThe patch says "You do not need to list arguments at the end of the path." but provides an example on the same line with an argument at the end of the path ('view/taxonomy/$arg'). This seemed contradictory and confusing to me...
