Has anyone tried hosting a Drupal site on SiteGround? They seem to offer SSH access, which would be a great help with updating via Drush, running cron, etc.

Most servers allow SSH access. If they don't, they probably aren't an appropriate hosting company for a Drupal site.

Contact me to contract me for D7 -> D10/11 migrations.
Or anything really. I'm friendly, and open to work or conversation.

The web hotel I am currently using for one of my clients do allow SSH access, but for a much higher price, which is why I am asking for opinions on SiteGround. Recommendations on other good and affordable hosts with SSH access are of course also appreciated.

Good hosting other than VPS or dedicated is hard to find.

For VPS, I can recommend www.linode.com, which you can scale to your resource needs and budget, and they will even license WHM/cPanel which makes admin much easier, IMO.

I use Linode VPS for my own web sites, and I agree that they are indeed very good. Interesting info about WHM/cPanel, thanks for sharing ... I definitely have to check that out.

I have experimented with using serverpilot.io to run a Linode, to outsource the Linux management, and mail at ZoHo.

But right now I am looking for managed hosting with mail hosting and SSH access for clients with limited budgets, and it seems to me like SiteGround might fit the bill.

If you get a linode with WHM/cPanel license, WHM/cPanel sets up email support. dns support, and all sorts of other Linux infrastructure, which can then be managed from the web WHM/cPanel GUI. It is essential to have the linode instance spun with WHM/cPanel installed immediately, without doing anything before that infrastructure gets installed, because it puts tentacles into everything in the Linus environment and takes over. With a really big linode, you could probably host sites for clients easily, and have control over varnish and cdn and so forth too.

Another good high end option is liquidweb.com, but their great service is priced for people making a profit from their site. Expect at least $150-$200 a month for a liquidweb VPS with all the needed goodies.

And I have been pleased with their helpdesk responsiveness. Preinstalled Drush and Composer and up to date Drupal installer. I tried Bluehost and Greengeeks prior to that and stuck with SiteGround. The one time I had to call helpdesk they were quick to get me back up and running so I have no complaints and the pricing is very reasonable for a personal site.

Thanks for sharing @Chris Kerry. Impressive that their servers come with preinstalled Drush and Composer. Have you by any chance experimented with automatic update, triggered via cron? Something like this: https://www.drupal.org/node/382566#comment-11000427
