A client currently uses a telecommuncations bundle for their phone, email and web hosting. This company should not be in web hosting. They provide the minimum of an FTP account for access. No control panel, no shell access, no database...

Problem is client does not want to change companies because of the bundle. With that said, is it possible to have a web host server and an email server?

What I would like to do is move their website onto my server and leave the email hosting on the existing server?

Is this possible? How?
Thanks

Your MX record in your DNS server should point to the IP address of where the mail server is.

Your A record(s) for the web site should point to the web server.

The web server should still be able to send out email though, since Drupal does send emails for registrations and such.

That is all.

This is apparently above me.

When I register a domain, I have to put in atleast two name servers. Is this what you are talking about? Is the first one the MX and the second, third, etc the A(s)?

Thanks

Short answer:

If you think this is above you, then don't do it and let a pro handle it for you.

Long answer:

It is not putting in different DNS server. It is what is configured inside those DNS servers.

Whoever operates those DNS server should be able to do this for you.

This will be like this, assuming your domain is example.com.

mail.example.com will be an MX (mail server), and will have the address 1.1.1.1
www.example.com will be an A record, and will have the address 2.2.2.2

On www.example.com you run Apache and Drupal.
On mail.example.com the mail servers are run. I assume you have to do nothing here, since that "bundle" already handles email for the client.

If your DNS server owner would not do this for you, then look at dedicated DNS servers such as easyDNS and zoneedit. In some cases your registrar can do that too (e.g. GoDaddy).
