I was looking into using Drupal as the base to my service I would like to build before I do this basicly it would be a module and I would host the service on my own box and it would be controled by my service only. Would I have to release the module to the public under the GPL? How can one make a viable business model without giving away all the answers to the business??
Thanks

I'm not an expert about the GPL license, but apparently some companies don't post back their modifications to the public:

Does the GPL require that source code of modified versions be posted to the public?

I think that you'll find that it's one thing to talk about something and another to actually do it. Don't be so worried that everyone is going to "steal" "your" idea and put you out of business. Most of people could care less about doing what you are, we are busy doing our own thing.

It may or may not be true that you are legally obligated to contribute for a for profit use. But you should contribute back to the community in some way and at some point for what you have learned and used. If you donate a small percentage of profit to the main developers, I'm sure they'll be happy, I believe it's tax deductible(you should check on that).

Your other choice is to hire a team to build a Drupal clone from the ground up and you can pay for it all. Thoes developers also learned from each other so your still not free of the moral obligation but then you wont owe anyone, not even to thank them for good advise.
