Currently I pay under $10 monthly and get 5,000 megs and more gigs of bandhwidth then I could possibly need. This also includes unlimited databases, unlimited subdomains and parked domains, and 20 add-on domains. All with Cpanel control at http://hostony.com. However, the downtime is not great and my sites run incredibly slow, http://giveorange.org is one example. I thought Gzip was in use and could speed this up, but no luck. So I'm looking for someone new, but when I look at the Drupal recommended ones, they all offer incredibly low storage, like 100-200 megs for about what I'm paying now.. I'm willing to have less storage for faster service, but not something this low. Any other ideas out there?

I was suprised that a big company, Network Solutions http://networksolutions.com has a package in that range with lots of good features, but not sure if it is all that opensource supportive. Any suggestions are appreciated. Oh, and support is important, hostony has great email support. Thanks all.

FYI,

Servage now offers 250GB + 25GB with coupon code: "25gbextra" (i.e. 275GB total) and 2100GB Monthly Data transfer rate.
Cost is $7.50 / £5.25 per month. VERY VERY COMPETITIVE. Don't know anyone who beats that.

http://www.servage.net/?coupon=25gbextra

This was a recent change .. a few days ago they were
offering 100GB and 1110GB monthly data transfer.

Also, unlike some other famous hosting companies, they do not expose you to unlimited bandwidth charges (i.e. there is overage protection).

HIGHLY recommended .. I read many good reviews on the web.

However, it appears DreamHost is still just a tad lower on monthly cost when you take into account the DreamHost Promo Code Discount.

With a DreamHost Promo Code Discount:
ONLY $3.78 PER MONTH FOR:
200 GB OF STORAGE,
2 TB OF BANDWIDTH,
UNLIMITED HOSTED DOMAINS,
UNLIMITED HOSTED SUBDOMAINS,
97-DAY MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE,
AND MUCH MORE!!!

Also, with 2TB of bandwidth, I highly doubt I'll ever come close to even approaching any overage charges. 2TB is a LOT of bandwidth!

The one advantage is see with Servage is that it offers "Secure Server (SSL) Included". If one needs SSL, this is a good thing to have. At the time, I don't need SSL as I rely on PayPal for any payments.

Disclaimer: I'm a happy DreamHost customer and affiliate. A portion of my affiliate proceeds go to supporting Drupal Projects Needing Financing. I've been able to contribute quite a bit to different Drupal developers for their various projects because I believe in giving back to the community. I actually track DreamHost purchases based on the Promo Code that was used so I can then give back to Drupal, The University of Texas at Austin, etc., as applicable.

kilwag’s picture

As a current customer, I can advise against IXWebhosting. I happen to be looking in this forum for a new host. I'm currently using a Wordpress system but want to move to Drupal. There's no way I'd trust a Drupal system on IXWebhosting.

With IXWebhosting I am getting a lot of down time, several times a month, having problems connection to the database. For instance, right now I'm in the middle of 14+ hours of downtime (that I know of) still waiting for a solution. It's not even an issue they were aware of.

Also, at least once a month I am unable to upload files because there is no space left on the device (drive) even though I don't come close to using up my allotted space. I have to call in and they always say it's someone abusing the system. It's a highly regular occurrence and they don't seem to have any monitoring system in place. Also, the online chat support is in India (actually might be in Russia now) and they are never helpful in these situations, the end result of 955 of my online tech-support chats has been "Please fill out a trouble ticket" They aren't always aware of system issues happening at the data center in the states.

Lastly, email hosting is very annoying for a couple of reasons. Authentication. To send outgoing mail you have to check your mail first, and it only lasts 5 minutes or so. So if you get a lot of mail and spend some time reading emails before responding, when you go to send email you get a relay rejected error message. Also, I find my legitimate emails getting blocked by comcast.net as spam several times a week because someone at IXWebHosting is sending spam through their relay. The Comcast block happens regularly, and a handful of times I've been blocked by some other hosts for the same reason.

Hold the phone - They just told me on the phone that they are moving to a new data center at the end of the month (March 2008) and all their users should experience a dramatic increase in performance... Essentially acknowledged they were having some major issues (but wouldn't say what they were) and that if I could just wait til the end of the month everything would be OK. Classic.

bailyflah’s picture

ixweb has to be one of the biggest scams out there. Since they've moved to their new datacentre, things have not changed in terms of reliability or support. For the 4th time in 6 months our site has been hacked. We use a pretty strong 16 alphanumeric password and yet our domains have been hacked 4 times. the latest one occurred on the 31st may from a canadian IP and a phishing site to a canadian bank was set up on one of our domains. We have now found ourselves in the middle of a pretty serious situation where we have the bank in question threatening legal action, we have various customers of the bank send us hate mail and whilst the site has now been disabled, the situation regarding how the hacker got in is still under investigation. IXWEB have told us nothing about what is happening, except to say that our domains face being shut down because of a breach of their TOS, never mind the fact that we haven't done anything and that their servers have more holes than a golf course!

so basically, anyone who is considering IXWEB, don't. They paint a pretty picture but if you don't want ISPs such as comcast, bigpond, bellsouth and various others, blacklisting you because the opentransfer protocol which IXWEB uses for email is being abused by an IXWEB customer and the rest of us have to suffer, and you don't mind the servers being hacked more than the law of averages would suggest, and you don't need support - Ever, then i guess they are worth considering, otherwise, avoid... they're more trouble than they're worth.

I'm still very pleased. I have 2 community sites and 2 client sites on DreamHost. The community sites see up to several hundred hits per hour, while still being able to render pages in a couple of seconds. I didn't expect that kind of performance from a $10/mo. host, but it is holding up to our growth well.

One of the community sites also uses streaming video that is included with the plan. I only use a few gigs per month so far for that, but it has worked out well being able to tag videos and stream them with video.module. Performance for streaming is great, but that's mostly bandwidth intensive, rather than CPU intensive like PHP.

Out of about 10 support requests, a couple were replied to within a couple hours, several were 12-24 hours, and only one was just over 24 hours. That one turned out to be an issue not caused by them. They have always been very friendly, and will continue replying until you are completely satisfied with your solution. The only significant downtime lasted a couple of hours about 2 weeks ago, after they had run into some problems replacing a router. I found out around that time, from their status blog, that they share their datacenter with myspace.com, in California.

I'm more than satisfied with DreamHost, as I've said before. Some of the benefits for Drupal are:

  • Shell access (including wget, mysqldump, compiler)
  • Unlimited domains/subdomains (multi-site setups are simple)
  • Darwin Streaming Server (for streaming media)
  • Instant toggle of PHP4/5
  • Unlimited MySQL databases (administered from single PHPMyAdmin)
  • Automatic snapshot filesystem/MySQL backups (can be instantly restored)
  • Large disk allocation (200 GB)
  • More than enough bandwidth (2000 GB)
  • Forums + wiki + support tickets + callbacks
  • $3.75/mo Coupons (see below)

jasonwhat’s picture

Bright seems pretty expensive, something like 35 monthly. I'd like to go with them and support their work, but can't justify to my client paying that when I will probably do the software updating anyways.

Bèr Kessels’s picture

Once you take in consideration:
Support,
Updating,
Developement,

Bandwith, Space etc, bryght comes out very cheap. Functionality and feature-wise they compete with $50+ private hosting solutions, but with added Drupal Support.

If you add all the hours you need for updating, fixing drupal issues, theme issues etc, to that, you will see that Bryght indeed is cheap.

If this solved you problem, please report back. This will help others whom are looking for the same solution.
Next time, please consider to file a support request.

[Bèr Kessels | Drupal services www.webschuur.com]

jasonwhat’s picture

I'm not sure everybody needs all that support. I don't know exactly what you get other than software updates. If they are going to go in and fix my themes for me or design custom modules of course that is worth more then the price. IBut for the average user with a site or two, like me, they are looking for reliability and at $10-15, but still a decent amount of space, this 200 meg deals won't cut it anymore. Maybe I don't fully undersand Bryght, and reseller prices aren't listed. I don't know what kind of control panel resellers and users have as well. I like the idea of them helping update and fix problems, but like having cpanel control for emails and other things.

Boris Mann’s picture

Not everyone needs "all that support". But, as I'm sure many developers have found, keeping many multiple Drupal installs up to date can eat up a lot of time. Never mind having to respond to customer support requests when something isn't working right. We maintain the entire technical environment while having resellers maintain the customer relationship.

We don't currently have cpanel-like control over email, but will be adding in this functionality at the Drupal level -- managing email accounts and aliases, etc.

We think that we provide good value at a price level that makes a completely hosted and supported Drupal install available to a much wider group of people, not only those that are developers.

Our listed price is $40US/month. Our reseller rates (i.e. if you are going to be running more than one site) are lower, please contact us if you are interested in running multiple sites (or if anyone has other questions).

At this stage, we are mainly focusing on resellers or technical users, as Drupal is too complex for the average end user. We might eventually partner with someone to deploy a "Drupal-light" that only includes those features needed for a small business/corporate-type largely static site (i.e. more CMS like).

Hope that helps.

(P.S. sorry for the delayed response -- we were at a tradeshow all day yesterday)

shayne-1’s picture

I have 2 recommendations.....

First - I can totally recommend Bryght!! If you don't need backend access to your Drupal install, go with these guys. There is no better Drupal team to be associated with. They are real Drupal developers, who give a lot back to the Drupal community. Their themes are really nice and their modules work. $40- a month is not too expensive!! If you're serious about your client's site, it's $40- well spent.

Second - Y'know, I expected not to like Dreamhost. Let's face it, more often than not, a host has something that poisons the water.....whether it's too few domains, sub-domains, databases, disk space, screwed up (and locked down) PHP config, poor support, or whatever....there's always something failing the experience.

Drupal runs great on their shared servers, you can do clean urls, run crons, and their support is great. I even get 3 callbacks from tech support every month, if I ever need faster than usual support.

Anyway, I'm running a number of Drupal installs and they all run great. Maybe it is the activation fee that keeps the yahoos away. I don't know. Whatever it is, I'm very happy with them.

I hope you choose Bryght. But, if you need backen access and you decide to check out Dreamhost, help a fellow Drupaler out and use this link, will you? Thanks.

http://www.dreamhost.com/rewards.cgi?hydrastis

"Currently I pay under $10 monthly and get 5,000 megs and more gigs of bandhwidth then I could possibly need"......"However, the downtime is not great and my sites run incredibly slow".

Yep. You get that.

jasonwhat’s picture

I had tried them, but they don't have the proper imap modules to use mailhandler and listhandler modules. I like people to be able to email in their content and this wasn't an option on there.

shayne-1’s picture

Mate, come on, "Poison in the water" is a wee bit dramatic, don't you think? I run several installs on Dreamhost and they run great.

I'll check out the imap module situation though. Thanks for the info.

All the best.

Shayne

jasonwhat’s picture

I didn't come up with that phrase in this context. That was Shayne who said Dreamhost has no "poison in the water" like most hosts. For me, lack of imap support is a showstopper.

shayne-1’s picture

Can you please point me in the right direction to learn about what you're doing with imap? Are you integrating Squirrel Mail or something similar?

Thanks.

jasonwhat’s picture

It uses an Imap Perl or Curl function or something. It is needed to run the mailhandler and listhandler modules which allow posting by email.

benthere’s picture

See DreamHost's wiki on Compiling a customized PHP5. You just need the php5-imap module for mailhandler, right?

From the readme:

The IMAP dynamic extension must be enabled. On Windows PHP installations, this is as easy as uncommenting
the line containing "extension=php_imap.dll" in php.ini. For other OS, you may need to recompile PHP
if you don't have this extension already.

My host had a high rating at http://www.findmyhosting.com and it's lived up to its near perfect score. No downtime, plenty of information, good value, fast. This site is also a good place to spot the dross like ap lus and the comments help spot flaky providers.

The Web Hosting Search Tool is midwaydown in the middle of the page and the results also include an uptime measurement from the 'reliability' link.

jasonwhat’s picture

Except for Linnode, storage is just to low on most of them for the price. 35 a year is good, but only 50 megs sucks. Also, I hate when people are charging you for stuff like email aliases and subdomains. Is Linode okay for someone without much programming? Most stuff I just control through Cpanel and ftp. I don't want to be having to install a bunch of mods like mod_url and imagemagick in order to use Drupal with them.

Just came across this blog: http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/hosting haven't checked into it, but thought you'd like this post..

http://www.dreamhost.com/highly recommends Dreamhost for your own web hosting needs.

Here are a few reasons:

1. Even the $7.95 a month plan is huge. You get 2.4 gigs of storage, 120 gigs of throughput, unlimited databases, 600 inboxes, 3 domains, a streaming server, a jabber server, and full shell access.
2. If you want to set up a blog, all it takes is one click in the Dreamhost control panel and Word Press (a great open source blogging engine) will automatically set itself up for you. You can make whatever customizations you'd like afterwards, but you are literally five seconds away from having a fully functional blog.
3. IMAP e-mail. So much nicer than POP3 email! I'd been using a regular POP3 account my whole life until I got my Dreamhost account, and now you couldn't even pay me to go back. I like using full mail applications, and IMAP-based mail allows me to use multiple copies of Apple Mail on multiple machines. Dreamhost's IMAP mail service also has a web front-end for when you're using a public computer. POP3 is dead to me.
4. Dreamhost's web-based control panel is the best in the industry to my knowledge. You're in control of so much that sometimes you feel like you're going to click the wrong button and restart an entire server farm. Having a good control panel is crucial in cutting out phone support time and FAQ-reading time. But should you need help, Dreamhost's FAQ section is also top-notch.
5. Dreamhost engages in random acts of kindness. They have increased the disk space, throughput, and all sorts of other things on my account twice in less than a year. The latest time occurred during their New Years sale, but instead of just giving new users triple space and triple bandwidth, they tripled existing users' allocations as well.
6. Every person you refer to Dreamhost becomes an affiliate of yours and you get 10% of their hosting fees for life. You also get 5% of the hosting fees of whoever they refer. It's like a pyramid scheme without the "scheme" part. If someone asked me who my hosting company was, I'd refer them unconditionally to Dreamhost even if this program didn't exist, so it's just a bonus that it does. It really only takes a few referrals and your hosting is either free or better than free.

jasonwhat’s picture

how fast are they? I get all those perks now, but slow as hell, go to http://giveorange.org to see. What is there control panel, I'm hoping Cpanel. Also, what's up with having a setup fee?

benthere’s picture

They just use coupons. I did. ;-)

Plus, if you pay for a year it's even cheaper with no setup fee at ~$40.

They just bumped up the disk/bw from 20GB/1000GB to 200GB/2000GB too. I've never seen em bump it up that much at once.

I'd been considering dreamhost for a week or two before I came across Walt's post. I emailed him and asked for details of his coupon offer. His friendly reply gave me all the information I needed and yesterday I signed up for a two year plan with dreamhost. Naturally I am yet to find out if some of the reservations expressed in this thread and others are problematic. I was a little concerned about the ssh command line repsonse time for awhile but it improved. I put in a support request nearly two hours ago and have no response as yet. It is too early to know whether page delivery times are adequate because my support request is to resolve fatal problems running phpMyAdmin which I need to access before I can set-up my initial sites.

I'm a little hesitant because I already have a multi-site installation at quadrahosting.com.au. I have been extremely happy with them for over two years but in the end the price of the American deals is overwhelming. In particular the unlimited domains and unlimited mySql cannot be approached by any hosting firms in Australia as far as I know. My hesitancy now is that for technical reasons I need to retain some of my sites at quadrahosting and now I will be looking at dual multi-site environments to keep-up-to-date. Plus one or two stand-alone sites.

For any Australian developers reading this, quadrahosting.com.au is certainly worth considering if you need an onshore server. They can provide servers in Brisbane (I think) or in the USA. Their prices are reasonable but their limits on domain names and mysqls soon begin to bite. Page generation times are good, I think.

I also have an account at pair.com and have always been happy with their service. At one time their db response time was completely unnacceptable but they resolved that once notifed. I now only use that account for non-drupally things and cannot comment on whether pair is suitable for Drupal. I expect so.

On the very positive for dreamhost I really like their console "panel", and the client experience they deliver. Quadrahosting is excellent in both those regards also. I had got used to receiving support request replies within minutes on average even at ridiculous hours of the night. Not always, but often enough. I wait to see how long dreamhost takes to respond to my cureent support request. Perhaps a few minutes after this comment goes live.. LOL.

Anyway, looking forward to my dreamhost experience. And once again I recommend Walt's coupons.

DISCLAIMER - I am about to become a DreamHost affiliate.

I've been with Dreamhost for a couple of years now. Their response times for individual support issues have been lengthening and small general server problems are at times disturbingly frequent (downtime, smtp outage, etc.). I had an smtp problem this morning and they had 800+ outstanding support tickets open. That's a lot of open tickets! That said, they get straight to fixing the problems and their support people have always been excellent....despite their heavy workload.

I really do wish they'd stop tripling server space, bandwidth, etc., since I've seen their quality degraded somewaht by it (IMO), but overall they can't be beat for value. At least not from the 10-12 hosts I've used over the years.

...fwiw.

Walt Esquivel’s picture

Shayne - I completely agree with you regarding response time and, although DreamHost responses are helpful, I wish they would respond in a quicker manner. How were you able to find out how many outstanding support tickets they have open?

"Many of you may have noticed that mail being sent from our system is being blacklisted by AOL, Comcast, secureserver.net (GoDaddy) and Spamcop. [...] In the meantime, you can try using your ISP's outgoing mail server to be able to send mail."

Again, I think this is because they attract a 'lower level' of customer (i.e. spammers) with their discount leader approach. I do wish they'd change that.

Without email the value proposition is definitely in the air.

Sigh.

shayne-1’s picture

The AOL DOS is killing me. Key members of my senior management team use AOL (but, that's another post topic) and several missed emails have now made me look like a chump. I thought it was AOL at first (of course ;-).

In addition to the 'triple this, quadruple that' approach Dreamhost is progressivley taking, it seems their very generous affiliate program of US$97/one time or 10%/5% trickle-down ongoing is surely gutting their business model. I can't understand how that can be sustained over the long-term.

After 2+ years of being a happy DH customer, I'm just about ready to bail. Too bad really...they have some good people there.

I found out that coincidently at the time I submitted my support request the dreamhost team was dealing with a major denial of service attack. I am still marginally concerned with the page generation times. I do access the sites from here in Australia so there is always some delay when using USA servers. I cannot as yet recall whether the dreamhost delay is worse or better than when I was hosting my main sites on pair.com.

Definitely, absolutely, pages from my sites at quadrahosting are being browser-loaded in a fraction of the time that pages are delivered over the Pacific from the dreamhost servers. It is an important consideration to me.

At this stage I feel I will need to keep some premium sites at quadrahosting.

Of course this situation may be different for American developers, or specifically for sites who's target market is Americocentric. It is difficult for me to evaluate how much of the delay is due to the distance from the servers and how much to the load dreamhost places on their servers and other factors internal to dreamhost. Does anybody have a suggestion how I could evaluate that?

John

JDSaward’s picture

I am told by the very responsive Jimmy at quadrahosting support that quadrahosting's Australian servers are in Sydney not Brisbane. Their USA server is in New York. Here is their Australian Network Multi-homed connectivity explanation and diagram. Looks good to me.

I'm actually having significant doubts about dreamhost's page delivery times. I just checked a site hosted by quadrahosting in New York from here in Melbourne Australia and the download times were much better than the sites I host with dreamhost. Of course in the end dreamhost is catering to a different market than quadrahosting. There must be room for both approaches.

Jimmy tells me that if they were to offer the same sort of unlimited deals as dreamhost offers their performance would become unnaceptable. Makes sense of course.

Now where can I get everything I want in one pot?

I've been using Dreamhost since September (when my previous host had a big meltdown) and I'm very happy with them. At first I was hesitant since they use their own control panel rather than CPANEL, but I ended up liking it. They give lots of disk space & bandwidth, shell access, and now they even support AFP.

www.hostpc.com looks really good. Great price for 30 domains. And your site is running pretty fast according to webpage analyzer which is also good. Anbody that posted other favorites have links to their sites to check the speed?

Hivemindz is on a different host. I'll have to dig up a commercial link to to them I am not sure about their prices. I go through an old aquintance that made php5 available to me just by asking.

For a www.hostpc.com site check www.heroforhire.net. It's not Drupal but it is loaded with some strange PHP that I have coded ;)

Perhaps not a deal breaker but they do not offer shell access.

In that category, I found http://HostingZoom.com prices to be very very attractive. 9.95$ gets you 1000 MB of space and 40 GB of bandwidth and 3 domains. 13.95$ gets you 2000 MB / 60 GB and 6 domains.

I have not tried them myself, nor am I affiliated with them.

I ran across them from some recommendations and mostly good experiences from people who host with them on WebHostingTalk.com, a forum for discussing hosting companies, plans, ..etc.

This actually looks pretty solid. Is anybody else using them? I love that you can actually pay monthly with no setup fee, (rare these days) that they seem to have good redundancy through mirroring, telephone support, a low-priced entry level package, and pretty good features if you upgrade to the 25 monthly package.

dchakrab’s picture

I second this!

I've been hosted with them for a couple of years now, and I've also recommended friends, clients, and organizations their way.

Reasons:

Ridiculous support - they're always on top of things, even in the middle of the night, via helpdesk / email.

Knowledge - You'd be suprised how many idiots think they can run hosting services. Joe and company have consistently had answers to my questions. I rate that *very* important...there's nothing worse than finding out your host knows less than you do.

Price - Can't be beat. Currently 2 for 1 sale: $35 for 1.2 G of space, 12 domains, 100 email accounts, unlimited databases (drupal, anyone?) and subdomains.

Current Drupals hosted there: dave.tropology.net, ctcnetchicago.org, digitalraindrop.com, and others.

Please list digitalraindrop.com as a referral if you do sign up.

Looking to do multiple domains, but simple sites using drupal, and other fantastico scripts. So far micfo is a total disaster. They took two weeks to figure out the mess created by my last host, their phone service is off more than on, their servers are slow, have locked me out and they have crashed.

I've already canceled once, and they doubled my bandwidth, which brought me into line with the above promotion. If this gets any better I will let you know.

Sorry to hear that you've been having problems. . . I actually host 6 drupal sites and haven't had any problems. Perhaps you are on a bad server. . . I remember reading in the forums that you could request to switch in some circumstances. That might explain the slow server and crash. . .

As a side note, did you pay them to "figure out the mess created by your last host"? or was it provided as a free service. . . ?

Hi...

I'm looking for a cheap hosting for Drupal which accepts php 4 and ensure me not to make updates to php 5 because it isn't admitted by Drupal.

I had a hoting with www.ferca.com but they update php4 to php5 then my drupal site didn't work well. I closed my agreement with them and now I looking for a new hosting.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Being tired of shared hosting and all of its limitations and problems, I just purchased a Virtual Private Server, since I am not quiet ready yet for my own dedicated server.
http://www.flexservers.nl/ charges EUR 12.71/month for 2GB space and 50GB traffic. You get full control of your own (virtual) linux server (and you can use the Plesk interface if you want). So you can install and run whatever you need (e.g. a Java server). I can't say much about the performance and reliability yet and to be honest, for this price I don't expect too much.

For 10 years now I have been hosting with Pair (http://www.pair.com) and basically have been very satisfied and yes, they support the open source community. I will probably keep a backup account there as well.

Yeah, doesn't look great, I'd have to pay 50 bucks a month to get same space.

harald.walker’s picture

What do you need that much space for anyhow, if I might ask? Even if you do a lot with images and movies, it takes a while before you need several GB and even then, it will create a lot of traffic (more than most providers are offering), unless you just want to use the web-space just as network storage.
Providers who are offering unlimited this & that can not be taken serious - that's just marketing. I though you just made the experience, that a 'cheaper' hoster has not been able to offer good uptime and speed (I guess not much support either).
If you really need a lot of space and almost no limits (you will always have to pay for more traffic/bandwidth), then get yourself a small server - either dedicated or colocation.

jasonwhat’s picture

You used to have to pay $35 to register a domain name, you still can pay that with the established guys who've been around forever, or you can pay 4.95 at Yahoo. Hmm, that is a good example Yahoo is establisthed, actually their hosting plans aren't bad and they do offer lots of space. I want to host about 5 sites, some will have a bit of media, nothing crazy, but 200 megs won't cut it. The shift is coming where you can get good service and good space, just like happened with domain registration. But some will still pay $35 for their domain.

All of them are offering you scams on some level, charging extra for things like subdomains or email aliases. My favorite is offering free open source features as if they are some huge value that the host paid for. I digress, but the point remains with things like Gzip and better servers and faster software, there is no reasons the host shouldn't keep up and start offering more space for less without sacrificing service. Whoever does that will attract a lot of business and do well into the future. Maybe nobody has done it yet.

oh yeah, aand have you seen the zipcode databases for US canada and UK? Talk about space.

I'm with Bert on this. I've run studioid.com and now http://urlgreyhot.com and on Pair for about 4 years. I looked them after noticing that Tomalak's Realm uses Pair. http://iaslash.org ran on Pair, but is now running on HostingMatters.

It's not cheap compared to the different options I'm seeing in this thread, but the uptime is phenomenal. The only downtime I've ever experienced is because of my occassional incompetence at configuring Drupal. No lie, but check netcraft. The control panel is pretty decent as well. Pair's servers are also very speedy.

I help with some sites that run on DreamHost and also on HostingMatters. I've found that the exerience at both to be decent as well, but still preferred Pair after using both.

ramdak5000@www.drupal.org’s picture

I am on Pair too for the last three years and I don't recall a serious downtime even once. Their servers are very well configured and maintained indeed. Stuff like mod_rewrite etc., with which so many Drupal users have problems on their hosts, as evidenced by the posts in the forums, are a cinch on Pair.

Most of all, they have a great commitment to open-source and run exclusive mirrors for several opensource projects. This is their way of contributing to the open source community. I have tested a variety of CMS packages with their varying requirements and never once had a problem because something was not set up at Pair. And, customer support has been very responsive, even by email.

Sites such as tomshardware.com run on Pair since last several years.

I have also heard that Site5 is good.

baba’s picture

I'm another 10+ year satisfied Pair customer. They're not the cheapest, but in the < $40/mo shared hosting area, you get a hell of a lot of quality and uptime for the money. Good perl & PHP support, plus MySQL databases running on dedicated database servers.

They have a domain NIC too, www.pairnic.com, which is also quite good. $14-19/year for domains, includes dns toos, redirection, etc. I've had my 20+ domain names all moved to pairnic over the last 4-5 years.

The thing I like most about pair is that they're very serious about their datacenter reliability and their external net connections.

I also have a cheap-ish dedicated server at ServerPronto (www.serverpronto.com) which I use for experimentation and when I need to run my own versions of things, but stuff I know needs to stay up and fast I keep at Pair.

I know Harald, probably you aren't reading this forum, but just in case you do, have you some experiance with the flexservers.nl Virtual Private Server solution? I'm interested as well, for a testing server and some smaler projects.
Hope you can tell me a little bit more,
TIA,
Bart

harald.walker’s picture

I am answering myself now since I got a few private mails regarding VPS lately. I canceled the contract with flexservers.nl within 2 weeks since they did not deliver the product on time after receiving my payment. Since then I am using a different VPS provider and am NOT satisfied at all with the performance. Face it, you are still sharing the same hardware with different people. I think a regular provider with a well configured system can offer you more/better performance for less money. VPS is nice if you want to experiment with a server without actually owning one. If you have outgrown your regular hosting provider, you should consider coloaction or a dedicated server for yourself.

nsk’s picture

I use WestHost, a Utah-based web host firm which provides virtual server (VPS/VDS) services and allows SSH access etc. It's not incredibly fast, tough, but not slow either. There are packages with 5GB disk and 80GB bandwidth for $26-27/mo if you pay for 2 years (there are other payment schemes too, such as 3-month and yearly). Their most inexpensive package is just $6.95/mo and you get unlimited mysql databases and unlimited email, having also complete access to php.ini, httpd.conf etc. On my website (see signature) in the right sidebar I have included a dynamic php script that shows the current server load. You may be able to measure whether the speed/load is suitable for you by checking it (no guarantees that it produces right results tough!). WestHost also has a very helpful forum where customers can help each other. If you think it is interesting, you may like to visit this page on my site. If you want any more info about it, you may ask me or post a message in the westhost forum and get opinions from other users too.

Pretty much the usual php 4.3.10/mysql/apache bundle versions.

Forgot ... no shell access for security reasons....ftp uploads fast :0)

This regularly pings in half the time that my other Cpanel hosting does.
The comparison is roughly similar to a choice between an Indy500 race car and a reasonable family car.

This is "no-frills" power hosting ... not for the lazy or faint-hearted :0)

jasonwhat’s picture

I've noticed a lot of these hosts are running 4.3, with 4.5 out now shouldn't they be up to 4.4. I know little about it, but is their much difference between the versions that should make me choose a host running on a higher version?

treblesix’s picture

I spoke to a couple of buddies who run their own
hands-on webhosting businesses (not re-sellers)
about this aspect of server software versions.

Their answer was essentially that the more bleeding-edge
the server software was ...the more problems, downtime
and support was involved. They preferred to run well-proven
bug free server software. PHP4.3.10 was the securityfix version,
and most opensource and commercial site software/scripts will
work just fine with this. There are few available scripts which actually require PHP5 only to run. The best ones (like drupal 4.6) will run on both php4.x.x and php5.x.x.

Unless you are a coder, and reliant on each incremental version upgrade of php, my own view is that this is best left to those who operate the servers and webhosting ... as they mainly prefer to operate with as few self-inflicted hassles as possible.

I would guess that is why servage still runs php4.3.10 when I last looked.
Developing and running a site is hard enough ... without webspace/server problems of any kind. Picky scripts and uniquely configured servers are best generally avoided to keep your future options open :0)

hth

jasonwhat’s picture

That does look pretty good, but what do I know about servers, do you know of any drupal sites, mabye your own, hosted with them? Like to check the speed. They do look good though.

Oh, is imagemagick installed?

treblesix’s picture

I have had about 30 different cms's on there for evaluation.

I have a ton of confidential stuff on there in development so no can show.
No drupal there atm for me to time for you ...but have a 17Mbyte install of
Moodle educational cms which runs and displays on screen from a "cold start" in under 1 sec even with my kids downloading music on our home network.

As for ImageMagick ...I do not honestly know as it drives me nuts and I avoid it preferring GD2. If servage does not provide it ...then they might if you ask them ...admit some scripts/cms will not run without it ...heyho.

As a comparison with Cpanel ..servage's account area just displays instantly when you login as do all the section pages ...the only delays are with backbone internet routers, dns servers and your ISP.

If you noticed, servage uses 1GB internal network and scsi disks and not
100Mbs and ide drives ..plus lots of server ram and load balancing. This is
blinding fast hosting wherever you are.

I've had a horrible experience with them. They usually take over 24hours to answer support requests, and most were just questions. They don't have many useful modules like imap_open installed and nothing special about their control panel. Mostly I switched to them hoping to see marked speed improvements from my old very crappy server...No, luck there, same speed as before. I'm on a new server from the folks at http://creativedrop.org who are smaller and quick to respond, and to my surprise, my sites are running much faster.

Of course 25 domains for such a low price is nice, but I like a faster response time.

lennart’s picture

The reason that the speed is not always top notch with drupal on Servage is that it needs to access mySQL for every click.

Servage has mySQL on seperate servers, which is usually a good sign - good for pure html anyway. Sometimes the internal connections between the web and database servers are slow.

The webservers themselves are very fast, and so are the mySQL servers, but Servage needs to work a bit on the connections between them.

I contacted them about the issue, and they said they are working on improving that.

It would be really nice if drupal could cache to html. Good for all of us who cannot afford colocation or dedicated servers.

I recently joined up with servage.net and so far I have nothing but good things to say about them. I am paying $7.50 a month and I was able to get extra storage space and bandwith using a coupon code. My coupon code is CUST19051 which will give you 5000 Mb of extra storage space (80000 Mb total!) For what it's worth, even if you don't use a coupn code, you get an extra 3-4 Mb of disk space each day that you remain with Servage.

.carey’s picture

I had problems with Servage.

One program I had installed and setup on their database just stopped working, as if it had never been installed - stuck at the setup screen. And for some reason I couldn't get it re-installed on their database, no matter what I tried. When I contacted them I just got the run around - was just told to re-install it, that it should work fine. Then two months later -- I had abondoned the site altogether (wasn't going to waste my time with that server/database situation) -- I went back for a looksee (just because I had really wanted it to work out), and lo and behold, it was there! It magically worked again! But it was too late. They were too unreliable for me at this point to want to use them. And when I left them for good (just earlier this year), I could keep my domain name if I was willing to renew at a price of $65 a year! And it was an awesome domain name, too. But, hey, not worth that price to me.

It was these things and the desire to have Cpanel and PhpmyAdmin that drove me away.

I currently have a reseller account with Network Redux. And I manage my own domains. (Never again will I try out a host that includes a "free" domain in which they control.) Setup the same program there. Hasn't stopped working since - no problems - about eight months now. But I've been using Network Redux for other sites since March 2005. And they just keep getting better. They increased my space and transfer by 5gig/100gig just recently for free! They work very hard to run a tight, secure ship. And tech support is 7 days a week (really). Out of fairness, sometimes they do seem to be a little slow... then I read a few minutes to an hour later via email notification that someone did something to slow down the server and NR is either working on it or has just fixed it.

Discloser: I am not getting paid or benefit from the aformentioned information. :D

lennart’s picture

I see your are preocupied with storage capacity and price. Another thing to consider is memory limit for php scripts. some really cheap solutions have memory limit enabled at 8MB which is not enough for many modules.

Original Post: September 30, 2005 - 21:29

I read this thread a couple of months ago when, on behalf of an organisation I was doing some consultancy for, was looking for a content manager and a place to host the same. We had decided on drupal and needed a cheap hosting arrangerment that offered us multiple domains and a reasonable amount of space and bandwith. We decided on Servage.net (see further up this thread). We've been with them a month and a half now, and are happy to report that having settled in with them, we have no greviances. Our account was activated very soon after signup, which cost us what works out to less than eight dollars a month. The (free) transfer of our domain from our previous registrar was smooth, customer support always very quickly answered our queries, and Drupal installed without a hitch- several times- as we do have the facilities to host twenty-five domains (with unlimited sub-domains) on the one account! At this writing, we're getting over three hundred and thirty Gigabytes of bandwith per month as well as over seven-and-a-half Gigs of storage space. But just as important- more importantly, Drupal runs without a hitch, and we have been getting all the support we need to accomplish the inevitable extensions to the (ample) functionality we're currently enjoying! Take a look at the resultant site: www.colemusiq.org.

I've been thinking about where the future might take us next in terms of hosting (VPS, colocation or managed), and really, it looks like we'll need to experience a CONSIDERABLE amount of growth before we reach that crossroads.

In closing, I'll tell you- Servage does offer a generous referral program, but I am so convinced of the value in the services they offer, that I'm actually not going to include our referrer code with this obviously pro-servage plug (Just go to the site and click on the link there!).

Edit 2008-08-21

I think of this post every so often since I put it up; I was just looking through my activities on this site when I decided to look this up and update it- I'm fascinated by the fact that it's been over three years and we're still with Servage.net! It hasn't been perfectly trouble free, indeed, we have considered moving to VPS twice that I can remember during that time, but each time, Servage.net has come around and improved their service to the point where we've changed our minds and decided to stay with them!

In terms of features, they're now offering hosting for not twenty-five, but an unlimited number of domains on the one account, over 510Gigs of storage space, and over 5000 Gigabytes of bandwidth per month!

P.S. Many thanks to the person who used our referral code and got themselves the extra space and bandwidth, and got us the extra two months of hosting for free!

Since I started hosting with Site5 - 4 years ago - I have not had one complaint but much praise for their service.

If you think CPanel is good - these guys developed it!

They have excellent service, zero downtime, reasonable pricing, flexible options, etc....

These guys have installed perl modules for me, and made other system changes as a result of my requests. They have grown a lot since I have been with them, but they still have a responsive, friendly and personal service. I don't know how they do it.

See here for more info:
http://www.site5.com/shared/

Plan example:
3000 MB Web Space
90 GB Bandwidth Monthly
Unlimited POP3/FTP/mySQL

Thanks, rkendall. Site5 does look very good. That Fantastico application installer looks really cool. I love the idea of automated installation of software. Might consider this for my freelance projects.

jasonwhat’s picture

Great site by the way. Is it Drupal? What drupal sites do you host with them?

gtoddv’s picture

Site5 and Hostgator have the best support and features for the money. Hostgator has the edge due to phone and live chat support. Everything else is about the same with the two. Been doing this a very long time and you'd be hard pressed to find any better than these two (maybe lunarpages)

Thank you for the interest in our services.

We don't handle domain name registrations at this time, sorry. I would recommend looking into namecheap.com for domain name registrations, you can then come back to us for all of your hosting needs.

In the past twelve years of using various web hosts, the only ones I've been satisfied with are Pair and Open Source Host. Most hosts overcrowd their servers and that makes your site slow. I'm really picky and my site has to be fast all the time.

Of the hosts mentioned in this thread, I've heard great things about Site5, Micfo and HostPC.

Dreamhost has a special which may still be valid. If you sign up for one year with their cheapest plan and use the coupon code, 777, you get one year for $9.99. They have had this special running since late last Fall. Some people say their servers are slowing down with all the new signups, but I have no personal experience with them.

WARNING ! "Hosting Open Source" has been the WORST host I've ever dealt with -- or even witnessed!

They screwed up my "one click" installation and then ignored my emails / support requests for upwards of two weeks. Just yesterday, they DOUBLE BILLED my account.

~ SUPPORT? No, not quite. more like DISTAINFUL TAUNTING:

When you try and ask a simple question - like why won't my password work, the one you emailed me? - they
a) ignore your first three polite emails then
b) send you a form email giving you imbecilic directions and a link to the login page, then
c) respond to your seething irate emails by saying somebody is working on the problem, then
d) eventually fix the problem, but by then your head has exploded (all over your social security check).

... hosting services of one kind or another. It took me over 2 weeks to decide between about 50 I looked at. I ended up getting a reseller deal so I can offer some hosting myself. ( re: http://www.cyberocity.com )

I suppose a lot of people do this so there are a million choices. Check ours out, though, even if only to leave an opinion. We got so miffed at some of the predatory practices we saw while shopping that we sell our service for bare minimum profit ... and I mean bare, but it's all full service with none of this counting email accounts and etc. and no "fine print" whatsoever.

I chose Norrix and I'm VERY happy with them (http://www.norrix.com/node/19). Sure, it's $10/month while others are $7.95 or whatever, but in my experience the dirt-cheap hosts have awful uptime.

What I like most about Norrix is their super-responsive support. Since starting with Norrix a couple of weeks ago, I have sent them about two dozen emails (yes, I'm a newbie) and they sent back helpful replies within an hour or two in all cases but one. That is worth a lot to me!

I've been using 1and1.co.uk which were fine for the needs of previous projects but had a few probs with drupal:
1: had to upgrade frome 'Home package' (GBP 5/month) to 'Business' (GBP 9/month) for SQL.
2: This package includes only 1 SQL database, which is enough until you want to run a drupal update!
3: No root server access, so I was unable to install:
- Cron jobs (had to use poormanscron.module)
- HtmlTidy (plug-in for Htmlarea.module - had to do without)
- Aspell (spell-check plug-in for Htmlarea.module - had to do without)
and stuck with 'preloaded' serversoft like PHP4.3 etc.

It works but there's no scope for server bells and whistles, which could be a good thing given my track record!

Of course I could upgrade again to their top 'Professional' package - which, incidentally, is what all their help FAQs are geared to, making them pretty useless when you don't have SSH access, etc - but that would double the price again ... there must be better deals around than this.

To be fair, their support has been 'helpful' on occasions, space and download limits are fine, server downtime minimal.

I have had quite a few 'time-outs' whilst drupal editing (site locks out for 5-10 minutes). This is probably due to time-out config on my browser, and so indicates server - bandwidth limits a bit tight? or just the internet?

I will be looking for a better host in the UK when I get nearer the end of the 12 month contract, but I thought these issues might be useful for others to consider when choosing hosting.

Good luck.

Is there a lag between UK and America, which slows down connections? And so is is tok for a UK business to be hosted in the USA or any other continent?

digitalclouds’s picture

Chueewowee,

This very much depends on where the servers are hosted - if the server has good connections to transatlantic network providers (backbones), and preferably has a couple that link into the Internet Exchange in London there should be absolutely no problem hosting a UK business on a US server (this does not take any legal issues into consideration such as the export of personal data - which could be an issue for a UK Company - data protection act).

Ok, if we want to get really picky about it .. yes, there is a lag .. but we are talking milliseconds most of the time, or a couple of extra hops.

Kind regards,
Jake.

Sometimes webhosts don't let you modify php settings through the php.ini or .htaccess file. This makes it impossible to increase the php settings like upload_limit or max_file_size. The last provider I was on (ipowerweb) wouldn't let me change the settings and so I had to leave because file upload size was a critical setting. Anybody know of webhosts that support modifying the php settings?

digitalclouds’s picture

We allow you to override some of them (not all can be changed from .htaccess), and the ones you cannot, we can talk about - at the end of the day .. if you cannot run your scripts effeciently, what is the use of a web host (we have gone a little beyond static HTML these days)?!

Our guideline is simple .. if your requested change does not hurt anyone, or helps others .. we can do it.

Check out our current Drupal offer:
http://www.digitalclouds.net/goto/xref/offers/supportdrupal/

We are also quite open to discuss any specific needs you might have - at the end of the day we provide hosting to meet our customers needs, and do not expect it to be the other way around.

Jake.

Have any of you tried, or have any opinion of godaddy.com's webhost services.... or Yahoo!'s?

Also, my Wired magazine every month has multiple page advertisements from 1and1.com, does anyone know anything about them?

digitalclouds’s picture

No direct experience with godaddy - big company, does handle DNS so they know what reliable systems are about (saying that, they have surprisingly little info about their datacenter) .. BUT .. hosting is not their primary business .. domains are .. worth remembering (also seems they have some problems in respect to spammers - check out the newsgroups .. you risk ending up in a block of blocked IPs) - also, they seem to offer ALLOT for VERY little .. this whole thread is based on the problems that are hidden behind this sort of offer - but like I said, no direct experience, just my opinion.

For 1and1 and yahoo .. have a look further up this post:

yep I switched from 1and1 to digitalclouds a few weeks ago and boy does it make a difference!

I guess there are other hosts around that are as drupal-friendly as digitalclouds, but I'm happy for now.

some problems I had with previous host, for example:

- no SSL access
- therefore no cronjobs
- limited to one mysql database
- clumsy ftp interface:
- no un-zip or un-tar on server
- ftp timeouts clipping large files (eg database back-up /restore)

... I don't even want to think about the trouble that caused, it's still too painful!

no, digitalclouds is a world apart. I seriously recommend this or a similarly set up host.

also DC is actually costing me less £ than 1and1.

And no they are not paying me to say this. Not yet anyway.

I use www.personalsites.org for any commercial venture that I don't host locally on my own servers. They have excellent packages, great support, low prices, the FULLY support Drupal, unlimited MySQL databases, and the use the CPanel management stuff.

They also handle eCommerce functions very nicely - HTTPS/SSL certificates, payment options, etc...

My experiences with them have been very good. In the 18 months or so that I've used them, they have had downtime once, which was correctly very quickly. I wouldn't recommend them for 99.9% uptime requirements - but they definitely have very good uptime numbers, and good performance to date.

This means the entry level plan will give you the following at £4.99 (excluding VAT) - per month.

- free domain (* only for a 12 month contract)
- 1.7 GB disk space
- 10 GB data transfer (bandwidth)
- 50 e-mail accounts
- 10 FTP accounts
- 5 MySQL DBs
- 5 domain allowance

- unlimited subdomains
- unlimited mail aliases
- unlimited mailing lists
- ... see our site for more details.

all host plans come with cPanel & Fantastico (script installer - includes drupal, but we can help out with manual installations if needed, no problems)

we also have a 90 day money back guarantee on shared hosting (does not include the cost of the domain I am afraid).

Thanks for the great info gang,

I've decided to leave ixwebhosting because they just can't seem to keep thier mysql servers running. Kind of a big thing, when everything you have is stored in the mysql.

I was was still loyal after losing connection from time to time - about 3 times a month.

But after they went down six times in one week, while I was trying to bring up a new site. I have to admit - I lost it.

So, I came in here to find what is working for others and was reviewing DreamHost, when to my wallets delight they are having a Birthday special. Its 80% off, up to the first year. So I thought I would post it here - in case anyone else is considering moving servers in the near future. I hope no one considers this advertising on thier behalf, 80% off is a rare deal... anywhere.

they can be found at dreamhost.com

But not because they have Fantastico. I much prefer to do my own drupal setup.

Note: They are the only host I have any experience with so take it for what it is worth. Here is why I like them...

1. Uptime has been good
2. Speed has been good
3. ssh access was not difficult to get
4. support requests have been quickly and efficiently answered (but I haven't needed it very much)
5. Their web management features (when I need them) are good
6. Cost for a 2 year plan is very good.

No negatives to report.

I use them as well and they seem to be pretty darn good. No phone support, but everything else is great. Very quick response to help desk, nice to do things to help an idiot (restored my site from backups multiple times, ran some optimization stuff I couldn't figure out, switched my server when the old one got overloaded [at my request, but they didn't complain at all]). I wish the disk space was better (7 gb for 70 gb of transfer).

Still overall very good, they host all of my sites.

We're on IXwebhosting right now, and our sites run terribly slow at times. They host their MySQL on different servers, which I think is contributing to the problem. The HTML site runs beatifully and fast, but our drupal sites crawl at times. Like the original poster on this website, I'm looking for something that is fast & reliable & not too expensive.

I love IXwebhostings features, like 24/7 chat support, and quick trouble ticket responses, but it's the speed that's killing me. I've raised the issue with them over & over, and they always say, we don't see a problem. When the sites are taking upwards of 5min to load a single page at times, that's just unacceptable.

AndrewGreen’s picture

WARNING
If you use 1and1 (oneandone), be very very careful when it comes up to re-billing time, if you want to downgrade or cancel the package you have with them.

I took up their offer of 25 .info names, free for one year. At the end of the year, they automatically billed me and tried to charge my credit card.

When I took up this offer, I did not see any terms and conditions about the price increasing - although the company says that there was a warning.

What I did was registered a complaint with UK Trading Standards (www.consumercomplaints.org.uk) and on iXat (www.ixat.net).

I HAVE READ A LOT OF COMMENTS ABOUT THIS COMPANY ENGAGING IN THIS TYPE OF UNDERHAND PRACTICE - MY OPINION IS THAT THEY ARE CHEAP, BUT SHOULD BE AVOIDED.

ReWarren’s picture

I agree with Andrew Green's comments about OneAndOne.

They've done the same thing to me following a free, no obligation trial of some .info names, automatically trying to charge a ridiculous amount to an old credit card and then threatening me with a debt collection agency because it got rejected.

Customer support is shocking. They don't seem to reply to messages sent through their 'contact us' page, and cancelling a contract is painfully complicated.

Avoid, regardless of cost.

Whatever you do... do NOT go with BRINKSTER.COM.

I have never seen a worse Web-based control panel and they do not give LOCK TABLES privileges (so you will need to hack drupal to make it work).

The support people on live chat are the SAME people/person for Sales, Billing, Tech Support... and they really can't help much. Requests get forwarded to "Network Administrators" or "engineers" and that is basically the end of it because you will never hear from them again. At least they have a 90 day satisfaction guarantee... so hopefully I will get my money back.

Bottom line: Brinkster sucks for drupal hosting.

peter_n’s picture

It is possible to get good hosting at a reasonable price, but you have to do your homework.

I'd say avoid hosts run by a single individual. When there is a problem (and believe me, there will be) he or she will be totally overloaded and there will be a lot of bad feeling.

The best thing to do is to have a look in the host's forum. If they don't have a forum, move on to the next host on your list. Ask some questions in their pre-sales forum and see how long it takes to get a reply and what sort of information they provide. Scan through the posts - are users generally happy, or do there seem to be lots of issues that take a long time to resolve? You will get the overall feel fairly quickly. There will always be a few people who aren't happy, so don't dismiss the host on the first bad post that you come across.

Time spent doing this research will pay off later.

EDIT: I've gone with hostpc and very happy with the way drupal runs. See www.botanicalartistry.com for an example of a drupal site.

Midphase also sounds pretty good.
Apparently you can get unmetered bandwidth which should be an incentive to pay that site a visit.

sime’s picture

I use midphase and there is excellent support. Customers are pushing for RSS feeds on each server so they can monitor issues, apparently that is coming soon (yay).

As far as Drupal-type sites are concerned, I would like midphase to be more proactive about sites that take up too many resources (which Drupal can do if without too much effort). At the moment I think you just get canned and you have to scramble.

That's me trying to be realistic, I've never had any problems myself.

I have gone bad on Midphase, I'm moving away. They started having internal problems over the last 6-12 months: communication problems, vindictive staff, failure to effect improvements, customer-forum mismanagement.

We've been using a totalchoicehosting.com reseller account for our hosting needs for about a year now. It's been relatively problem free, though there are a few caveats:

1) The tech support people are sometimes dense. I'll ask someone to set up another parked domain for multisite hosting and have to explain how the whole thing works. Then a week later I'll request the same thing to find that the very same tech support person needs it all explained to them again. Repeat process until about a week goes by.

2) Their website is terrible. Their forums have terrible search features. Their installation of hosting management tools (Modernbill, forums, and whatever trouble ticket system they use) is sub par and I can't help but getting the feeling they are unable to figure it out themselves.

For example:

I submitted a few trouble tickets through their billing system, modernbill. The first few got answered, the rest did not. I was informed that they stopped using modernbill's ticket system after I submitted a ticket to another ticket system. It's still there though, they just don't check it.

I mentioned they should have a blog, or send me email to tell me important things, but their response was that they would consider that but I should troll the forums for news. This is totally rediculous to me - I don't like forums and I don't feel like I should seek out important news about my hosting company (outages, for example).

They double billed me because apparently their system let me set up two paypal subscriptions to pay for service. It took weeks for them to look into it. By then I had been double charged for three or four months. I eventually got back a response that a refund was "unprecendented" but they would refund only half of what they owed. Why? Because refunds take a full month and I would have to pay again anyway. ...! I'm sorry, but being one that's worked in retail for a long time there is no reason for a refund to take a month, let alone five minutes.

That said I've experience little to no down time and the plan is decent.

Hi,

I would like to know whether any of these hosting vendors do
Drupal install, upgrade, configuration of existed modules, at least basic modules. I would consider to sign up for one who can do all the drupal configuration including required modules. Please let me know.

Thanks

the fantastico script takes care of the installation. If you click on drupal installation in the control panel menu it will install all the sql databases for you and all you have left to do is sign in and create your admin account.

other features are:

Free Domain name
10 gigs storage
250 gigs bandwidth
50 mysql databases, 50 postgre sql databases

PHP, loads of CGI modules, lots of free scripts such as PHP Form, Wordpress, PHPBB, VBulletin, PHPMail, Guestbook, Chat, Calendar etc.

highlandhosting, your site sounds great! it's got moodle, noah's classifieds, oscommerce. I'm going to check it out. oddly, drupal was not listed under cms. for others, i think highland could be a great place to test software. highland has the best collection i've seen.

I use opensourcehost. they install everything. will upgrade for free. replies to my emails usually within 5 to 60 minutes. will donate 10% to drupal. one apparent drawback is that servers are only in 1 city (dallas) as far as i can see on their website.
in general they've been great and I really recommend them.

i've been thinking about trying about bluehost. they have toll-free 800 support.

do not use interland. the tech support person does not know what ssh or sftp is.

I'm very beginner in site deveopment and have no ideas about how to choose hoster, especially for PHP-driven site. I'm going to transffer my Metal Portal from HTML- to PHP-basis. So far, It seems that Drupal looks like the best choice.

Reading through comments I've concluded for myself that Bluehost and Dreamhost are two the highest rated services among visitors. It would be great if somebody compare spesifically these hostings for customer service, Drupal perfomance under high load (50-100 users at time) and so on.

I needed a reasonably fast Drupal hosting with hosts located within France for reasons regarding local privacy regulations, and Typhon came out as the best choice for such situations some time ago.

This is a no frills solution, though. They'll do basically what you ask from them, but nothing comes preinstalled apart from PHP and the DBMS.

Here's something for everyone to play with.

I've set up a test drupal installation at www.ruriecruise.com. Seeing as it's a spare domain i have kicking around i thought i'd jsut let people run wild with settings etc. (which is why i haven't bothered with security on it.)

It'll hopefully give everyone a chance to see how quickly a basic drupal installation runs on our servers.

Don't go with registerfly. I was constantly getting my IP blacklisted as a spammer on the shared hosting package.

I've been with Imhosted for about a year now. Had some early server crash problems, but it's been solid for about quite a while now.

Very cheap, Tons of storage/transfer, IMAP, SSH. Tech support is very capable, but they (like many) tend to speculate the easy answer first. You have to be alittle persistent if it's something more complicated. Once you get them on the right track, they get it done though.

Oh, and they do have Fantastico drupal installation, but you wouldn't want that because:
- It probably still installs 4.6
- You wouldn't get a chance to understand how things really work.

I have already raved about site5.com in this topic, but since my last comment they have gotten even better. They aren't just a hosting company, they are a technology company and customers benefit a great deal because of this. Price is unbeatable for what you get. A few notables:

- choice between php4 and php5
- Ruby on Rails is supported (awesome development platform)
- Flashback, their proprietary version control/backup system. You never have to back up your files again! and can roll back to any previous version of your site or a particular file whenever you want. Quite amazing system.

Bandwidth and diskspace are outrageous and support is top notch.

http://www.site5.com

I am not an agent of site5 nor do I/will I benefit from this endorsement. Just a very satisfied customer who has been using various hosting companies for 13 years and have yet to find anyone better.

jasonwhat’s picture

As I explain here, they make lots of promises but don't deliver, http://drupal.org/node/44173#comment-115627.

If you look, Flashback, which they are advertising like crazy still isn't available except as a limited beta test. It's kind of like saying, "Get Drupal 4.7 now with full Ruby integration" when that may be in the works, but it isn't here yet. They did the same thing with Rapid Reflex which they simply discontinuted. Lots of people have had load problems out of nowhere with Site5 lately as well.

andre75’s picture

I second that. Too bad. I just moved to them 3mo ago after Powweb went sour. For a while performance was outstanding. I guess too many people moved and too much oversellig going on, although it seems that I am somewhat lucky with my server at this moment. Others seem to have a lot more trouble.
Since I am not planning to move every 3mo, I will pay them for another 3mo as my payment is due. At least I learned from the Powweb experience never to sign up for a year again.

jasonwhat,

Back in October 2005 you wrote with regard to DreamHost:

I had tried them, but they don't have the proper imap modules to use mailhandler and listhandler modules. I like people to be able to email in their content and this wasn't an option on there.

Is your "imap modules" issue still valid? I'm using Dreamhost and am curious as to whether or not it's still a limitation. Under "E-mail," their comparison chart mentions "IMAP Access", but I'm not savvy enough to know if it solves the issue you were having last year. I hope the issue is resolved. However, should you have any questions or concerns with regard to any perceived DreamHost limitations, feel free to reply here and I'll see if I can persuade them to offer something if they don't currently offer it. Hey, it doesn't hurt to ask! :)

I've been using DreamHost now for a few months and am very happy with the service and with the affiliate program they offer which which allows me to waive any setup fees for folks signing up as well as to offer discounts on other plans.

Disclaimer: the only affiliation I have with DreamHost is with their affiliate program.

I have 3 drupal sites with them, all of which have little or no downtime. No problems what so ever and been with them for 1.5 years.
The support I recvd when I had question on multisites and when I messed something up with a misplaced mouse click, was excellent and fast.

I have heard some sites hosted on some servers had issues, but I have not had any.

Wow, I really like the easy to see display comparing the 5 hosting companies! Could you please share how you created it? I'd greatly appreciate it!

Do you know how the "Access speed" (9 or 10 away from the bottom on your link) was determined? Is there a standard way to test access speed because I'd like to start testing my host's access speeds. (And it seems drupal.org is slower than most other web sites I visit, so I'd like to test its speed as well.) In addition, how is "Stability" (just below Access speed) determined?

I believe DreamHost's email accounts (POP3 / IMAP) actually start at 3,000 accounts instead of 675 as listed on your link.

Thanks!

As experienced person you can determine speed and stability by yourself.

But exist a scientifical approach:

1. speed can be determined by ping time, transfer of large file, program execution time, ftp access time etc.
2. stability also can be mearured, for instance I have always problem to transfer many small files per ftp with Samon

please read also
http://www.karpatchev.com/node/14 ( not stable )
http://www.karpatchev.com/node/15 ( cheapest one, slow and extremely unstable, look at chart )
http://www.karpatchev.com/node/16 ( middle, but extremely stable )
in the pictures and tables there you can clear see difference in the speed and performance of 3 web-servers from 5 mentioned in the main table

green monkey’s picture

I'm also on Dreamhost and I have been very happy. But tonight I have just discovered that there is an email block set at one hundered emails per hour.

This is not going to be fun. I'm using SimpleNews module and the smallest wait time is 25 seconds between emails. If my math is correct and with a wait time of 25 secs, this is 2.4 emails per minute or 144 per hour. 100 emails per hour - Limit busted.

I think I figured I need to get it down to 1.6 emails per minute, so I'll have to see if I can adapt SimpleNews for a longer wait time.

But if I push it out to far ... will it time-out on me? I guess I'll find out.

I might add that Dreamhost requires:

Mailing list subscriber information must include the date and time that the subscription was confirmed, as well as the IP address of the subscriber at the time of the subscription. The user must be able to present this information at DreamHost's request.

We currently don't have this type of an email module (Newsletters) that performs this type of duty for non-registered sign-ups. Like SimpleNews, I really enjoying using this module, its simple to use and has been well thought out in design. The only problem I have is that people sometimes forget they sign-up for something or wake up in a mood and file a report to the Host, putting the web master on the defense for no good reason - yet there it is.

Part of an article at NetMechanics titled Hosting Tip: Trust But Verify states:

How Not to Chose a Hosting Company

Many Webmasters use the free version of our Server Check service to evaluate hosting companies. It's a nice idea. After all, if I'm evaluating ABigWebHost.com, why not test their Web site to see how it rates?

Unfortunately, this may give an unrealistically good view of performance. Most hosting companies run their own site on a dedicated server. So while your site might share a server with 200 other Web sites, any one of which could drag you down, the hosting company's site won't have that problem.

The only true way to preview a hosting company's performance is to find the name of a Web site that's hosted there, and then monitor that site for a week.

radiofranky2006’s picture

they were down for 20min.

green monkey’s picture

I've been up all day too.

It must have been the server you were on -- bad situtation for a first day - ouch

You might disagree with this, especially if you are down - but this is how I look at down time.

I look for several factors from a Host

----- for everything will break sooner or later, but what is being done when it breaks --- I find important.

1) Do they quickly verify that the server is down?

2) Do they jump on it right away?

3) Do they keep me in in the loop and up to date?

4) Will they work and repair it during odd hours? (Holidays and 3 am stuff)

5) Does the same probelm come back a day or two later?

DreamHost has been fairly good at getting things back online and running in a short period of time.

.. and if I have a big problem and need to discuss it over the phone, I have always gotten a call back within the hour.

I once had a php issue (their fault) that was discovered at 2 am, it was fixed by 3 am and on a Friday night no less - that is why I stay with them.

Anatsim’s picture

>Did you test www.dreamhost.com itself and isn't it on a dedicated server? Or did you test a DreamHost customer site that is on a shared server? Please see article below.

Yes, I have tested their main server :(
Since I have no account on DreamHost. But on the rest 4 hostings where tested exactly virtual hosts.

As I can see, many of us have DreamHost account.
If someone from you setup for me one from unlimited number of subdomains and give me ftp-access to it, then I could test site more carefully.

Dreamhost says they offer dedicated hosting by partnering with hosting.com. What's that about? I haven't seen hosting.com discussed here. What do people know about them? Does hosting.com primarily sell under their own brand? Are they any good?

Hosting.com has an amusing ad running saying they are selling surplus dedicated server inventory for $1 (normal price up to $349). What's that about?

Arto’s picture

My guess is that it's a pretty simple relationship: DreamHost gets an affiliate fee for each customer referred to Hosting.com. Hosting.com is a reliable company but rather on the expensive side, so when DreamHost gets their own dedicated server inventory rolling, they'll be able to grab back a good portion of the people referred to Hosting.com.

Just my two cents. For evaluating any hosting company, the WebHostingTalk.com forums are invaluable.

Drupal.org is hosted by OSDL (www.osdl.org).

I doubt if any hosting company can match the level of service they are providing to the Drupal project.

OSDL uses plone... hmmm they should be converted to Drupal!

gtoddv’s picture

OSDL doesn't provide hosting services (to the public) so that is not really a realistic comparison. However, there are a few dedicated hosting providers (the closest comparison to OSDL) that could get you darn close to the same level of service. Of course you'd have to pay quite a bit for it!

I know just a bit about BlueHost, having compared it to a few other hosting companies in the past. Does BlueHost only have one (1) hosting plan?

I currently use DreamHost and have been very satisfied with their service level and extensive range of features. DreamHost isn't the most responsive when it comes to answering customers' issues (it seems to take just a bit less than 24 hours, on average), but for just under $4 US with a DRUPAL50DOLLARS promo code, one gets an incredibly good deal, IMO.

Here's a quick list of a few reasons that I like Dreamhost for hosting Drupal sites (and sites in general).

  • SSH access - I'm a command-line nut and I don't like using web-based editors for editing code or moving files, etc. When you're doing an upgrade or migration of files on the file system there is no faster way than to have a command prompt and make your fingers work. I don't like telnet because it's unsecure and there are enough hackers and sniffers in the world that could pick off your account details in a heartbeat if they desired to do it.
  • SFTP or SCP - This is possible because of the SSH access. You can transfer your files securely to the server. I don't usually have files that are that sensitive in nature (and if I did a shared host is not the best idea anyway), but at least the login process is encrypted so the keys to your online kingdom are not being transferred in clear text.
  • SSL on the control panel - One thing that bugs me about a lot of hosts is that the control panel is not secured with SSL, or at least not by default or if it is it's only on some non-standard port. It's not a good idea to enter the username/password that holds the keys to your online kingdom in plain text. It can easily be sniffed and then before you know it you've been thrown off your throne, locked out of your own account. Who knows what damage the cracker might do at that point. SSL protects you from this making it so unlikely that it isn't a concern.
  • SAN for disk storage - Many hosts have multiple servers in their environment that each have their own local disk arrays (at least you certainly hope they have disk arrays) with routinely scheduled backups (likely to tape). The problem with this is that tape backup is slow and recovery can be painful. Plus if a server goes bad, say the motherboard flakes out or some other piece or hardware is on the fritz, it's a surgical operation to recover it. With a SAN you can bring up a new server and attach it to the area of the disk associated with the flaky server and bring it online relatively quickly. Plus it's much easier to grow a SAN-allocated disk (i.e. add more space to it) than it is to add a physical drive to a server. Yes, you can hot-swap physical drives in physical servers, but they have limits in terms of how many drives can be added. A SAN has hot-swap capabilities as well with much higher limits as to how many drives can be added. And the storage in a SAN is much faster than typical server storage. In a SAN environment, suppose you have ServerX that is running 90% capacity on a disk (and this is where your site is running). The system adminstrators can grow the size of that drive through configuration and make that utilization go down to 25% in minutes with no downtime. So, while Dreamhost has HUGE storage capacity for their accounts, they also have the environment to back it up when the need arises.
  • PHP4 or PHP5 - The control panel allows you to select PHP4 or PHP5 for your fully hosted accounts with a single click. And you can change it at any time! This can be very handy when you want to try upgrading a site to PHP5, for example, of if you start with PHP5 and find a problem you can switch back to PHP4.
  • Custom database hostnames - When you create a database you can create a custom hostname for it (e.g. db.example.com) which can then be used to access phpMyAdmin and must be used for accessing your database. So you use this instead of localhost in your Drupal settings.php file. This is nice because, among other things, the MySQL server is separate from the web server (at least I've found that to be true with my accounts as confirmed by the different IPs in the DNS settings). This means that your web server can focus on serving web pages and your database server can focus on serving database requests. As long as the line between them is fast (I assume it to be, but don't know for sure) then all is well and this is generally a better configuration than having the database and web servers on a single machine (especially in a shared hosting environment).

These are some of the main things I like about Dreamhost, in addition to good support (at least that's been my experience) and very affordable plans.

I've been hosting my sites on Servage for the past year. They work great with drupal!

For eu6.35 a month you will get:
250gb space (25gb more if you use the coupon)
2100gb transfer
Unlimited email accounts
1000 mysql databases.
Unlimited domains and subdomains.

and also, you get a domain name for one year (or an extension of a current one)

Every support call I've made, they've given quick and informative replies.

Use this link to get 25gb more space:
http://www.servage.net/?coupon=getfreespace25gb

Or just type the coupon when registering: getfreespace25gb

I thought I'd throw my two cents in as well. I resell at www.jcswak.com. I have three plans but am looking to put together a few more that would be specific for Drupalers. Your input is valuable and welcomed.

I've been running many versions of Drupal on these servers for years and have never had a issue with downtime. Also, support is guaranteed in one hour or less. From my experience, it's less.

Here are some briefs on the plans I currently offer:

Business - $4.95:
15000 MB Data Storage
300 GB Data Transfer
3 Domains Hosted

Corporate - $7.95:
25000 MB Data Storage
400 GB Data Transfer
30 Domains Hosted

Enterprise - $12.95:
40000 MB Data Storage
500 GB Data Transfer
Unlimited Domains
SSH Support

All include:
Free Setup
Free Domain Name
Linux w/ Apache
PHP 4 & 5, Perl, MySQL, CPanel
2.5 GBit network
30 Day Money Back
And Much More!

Please see full comparisons of my current plans at http://jcswak.com/?action=webhosting&submenu=compare. Again, I'm looking for input for new plans to create.

Hosting is not my main job, so I'm not out to make a killing from the cost. Let me know how I can help you, and you can help out a fellow Drupaler.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the company which hosts us currently.

Dream-Hosting.co.uk.

Fantastic packages, supportive, hell they recompiled apache to make the image modules watermarking work for me. They're quick and responsive and their packages are fucking excellent. And cheap!

Give them a look!

In my early online days I used to analyze all sorts of web hosting related information so I could finally find the host I needed. But often, after reading this comment and that review, after taking into consideration all important and less important facts, after being bombed with all sorts of web hosting offers and recommendations I'd end up with no confidence that the host I was about to choose was the right one. After having my site hosted with numerous hosts I finally realized that the reliability of the hosting company and the proven capability of delivering quality services matter the most. I know all of the hosting companies claim to have it all but the truth is that few are capable of delivering according to their promises. Yes, the key is to find really reliable and proven web hosting providers. This way your web hosting problems that may emerge will be taken care of fast and with competence. Yes this is the most important thing to have in mind when deciding on the right host and if I might say all other web hosting information is almost needless. Having all this in mind I set on a journey to find trustworthy web hosting providers. But this was harder than I imagined. Every established company I could find on the net was so established that it would eat all of my budget or it was so focused on doing the business with the "big guys" that it just wouldn't be interested in dedicating itself to my small web site needs. As for the smaller hosting providers, there was so many different reviews, different comments and recommendations of which so many false that I couldn't detect which of the hosting companies were truly reliable and suitable for my needs. I visited all web hosting review sites but they just categorize companies and describe all kinds of features which by the way almost all hosting companies claim to have. What I was interested in was someone to show me couple of tried and proven web hosting providers I myself could trust and not to give me all kinds of categories, features and incentives which in the end would delude me and falsely make specific hosting company look better. I wanted to find reliable and proven host. Then I bumped into a site never heard of ( http://www.hostinglair.com/index.html ). There were described all sorts of hosting types and web hosting issues with no bombing the customer with numerous unnecessary information. There were some web hosting companies listed and described as reliable and proven. I was skeptic at first because I noticed affiliate links but I did some research and established that if the money was the reason for those companies to be listed there were certainly better affiliate deals. Also some companies that were recommended had no links at all, just names were given. That was enough for me to understand that the hosting providers were not listed because of money but because someone really thinks those are trustworthy companies. To make it short, I finally signed up with Pair Networks which was among others recommended on hostinglair.com. and been completely satisfied since. Reliable and proven, tried and trusted was emphasized on this site and that's what in my opinion matters the most.

I've been using Quality Host Online at www.qualityhostonline.com for the past few years and been pretty pleased with them. They only have email support, but it's usually fairly responsive. I've got a reseller account where I host a few domains. I get a lot less spam and blacklisting problems there than on the 1and1 accounts I have!

Some of these VPS plans offer tons of bandwidth http://www.hostingdiary.com/2007/09/best-vps-hostin.html

Well, I use hostedtoday.com ...no downtime, loading is pretty good, a ridiculous amount of space and cPanel w/ Fantastico (10 mySQL db though). It's a bit pricey, $22 a month, but I'm pretty satisfied with it. Just adding another option. ^^

Take a look at Vistapages. They have enough space and have 1-click drupal install. It'll be easy for you to use their web hosting for Drupal integration!

I would recommend my webhost.
I have been with them for more than 4 years and is still hosting my site with them. They are very responsive to all my support questions. I seldom run into any problem and server uptime is very good. After all, they have been in the hosting business since 2001. I would say their service is reliable and come highly recommended. Check them out at http://www.mxhub.com .

my sites used to host at 1and1:

advantages: cheap, easy to setup
disadvantages: bad service (took forever to anser technical service), server is extremely slow

currently I'm hosting at hostmonster.com:
advantages: very good service (instance chat technical support), good price, used to be very fast
disadvange: my site used to run w/o any problem until recently. I am constantly running into memory problem (I'm having less than 30 modules installed (including those core modules))

Iplus Digital also offer some excellent plans at a fairly cheap price. The thing about picking a host is you really have to ensure that they are a good fit for your purpose. Best tip I can give you is to drop every host a support message and see who responds quickest and with a quality answer.

Support doesn't seem like such a big deal when you are first buying it but when something goes wrong you need it real quick.

Anyway, take a look at:

I always use godaddy or hostgator for hosting. Their customer service is great.

I'm going to be using godaddy for one of my client's domains:
