Hi

I am new to Drupal 8 development and had a question about Drupal 8 installation.

I will be installiing a Drupal 8 website on a hosted VPS unix server with Linux.

I have watched videos where Drupal 8 is installed and then Composer, Drush and Github are installed subsequently.

I have read alternative sources where it's recommended to install Composer first and then Drush and to install Drupal 8 using Drush.

Which method is best and why or doesn't it really mattter? Is there any preferable order at all to installing these different programs or can you install them in any order?

Many thanks

Even though it's not recommended by the geniuses who develop Drupal, at this point in time you can still install and update Drupal 8 (through 8.4.0) using just Cpanel on your shared server and the tar.gz files from Drupal.org. This may not work for certain contrib modules that require composer, but it still works for core and quite a number of modules.

If you have a hosted VPS server you may have some luck getting Composer and Drush to run. The basics are that you install Composer, then use that to install Drush. On a shared server you may have less luck. Composer and Drush run okay on a Windows PC though I've run into trouble in the last few days trying to update Drush to the version required for Drupal 8.4 using composer. Requirements conflicts or some such.

With Composer and Drush you can set up a Wampserver or similar and then set up a site that duplicates the settings from your real site on the VPS. That's a good way to test things.

You can spend days reading the complex discussion threads on the issues queue side of the Drupal.org site relating to whether they are going to actually REQUIRE composer or not.

I just read this recently and thought it might help you figure out your composer issue. https://www.drupal.org/node/2914193

Oh! I'm in the very same situation as you, @Fistycuffs ! So what option have you chosen?

I am hesitating between installing using Drush:
drush pm-download drupal
and using Composer:
create-project drupal-composer/drupal-project

I think, I am going to try drupal-composer/drupal-project because people write this one is becoming more common way.
