Hi!
Is there a plan amongst core developers for making Drupal 6 truly multilingual? As I have seen there is no support for multilingual custom menus and taxonomy yet and that is kind of crucial for making a good site in multiple languages. Do the core dev team plan to make that happen themselves with a small set of official contributed multilingual modules? Or just leaven it to the creative module developers and hope for the best? :)
I am eager to help in any way that I can, but that is only interaction design-usability and testing I am afraid (wouldn't recognize a PHP-snippet of code if it jumped up at bit my butt).
Please point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance! :)

One way to go would be to put one navigation structure per language in a block and let the blocks visibility settings be guided by the language prefix in the URL. Tried that but couldn't make it work ... of course. :P
Shouldn't this setting in block visibility work?

Need contrib
Well core i18n features are set in 6 so no new stuff will go into core until D7 (which is the plan AFAIK). That means that contrib modules are still needed for a "completely" translated site. The i18n module has a D6 dev version so I would recommend getting in there and helping test it out so they can get it up to a full release. They also have some preliminary upgrade scripts (the changes in core mean that the contrib modules will need to change quite a bit around.) As far as I know, the other big module that folks use, Localizer, has not really begun the port to 6 but there is talk of it.

Testing
The i18n module works very well on D6, although there are a few minor quirks. The homepage setup must be implemented manually as far as I can see. The default language path setting is ignored, so one has to work around that.
