Is there any ongoing work on integrating mybb with drupal? I think this would be an excellent addition to drupal and Ive seen lots of people saying the same thing if you google 'mybb drupal'. It's kind of funny that the best open source CMS and best open source forum solution haven't been integrated yet. Is it too difficult a task or something? What exactly would need to be done to integrate them?

Need + action
What it takes is for someone who needs it to either build it or pay someone to build it. That's how stuff gets created in open source.
Drupal comes with a built in open source forum which is just fine for most peoples' needs. People that need something more feature full usually go to something like vB or phpbb, both of which have integrations already.

Have you looked at Advanced Forum
There are also at least a dozen modules, if not more, by which you can extend your forum based site.

Hmmm, I need it, but it'll take me too long to build as Ive only started with drupal and I have more pressing development/design stuff to do. Can you tell me exactly what would be entailed in doing it, like what situations would you have to account for? And do you think it would take long to develop?
@minesota: Im not too gone on drupals advanced forums, seems too generic or something. I mean look at some sites running av and look at some sites running mybb and you'll see the difference. Mybb is by far the best open source forum software imo and the forum section will be a major part of the site Im working on so I really would like to use it.
Not that different

Has basically the same stuff in it. And if you want the author info across the top, that's easy, too:

Are Drupal's forums the best out there? No, definitely not. If they were, I wouldn't have such a long to do list for 2.x. But the differences are mostly on the administration end and some of the fancier ajax for users. The general "look" is nearly the same and most of the features are available using Drupal's vast contrib library.

Hmm, have you got any
Hmm, have you got any examples of it where it is not using the default skin and it is themed to the level of a mybb/phpbb skin? How customizable is it?
I found this tutorial on drupal forums through google - http://tips.webdesign10.com/how-to-make-a-drupal-forum. Is it any way relevant to advanced forums or is it completely out of date now?
Cheers.
Eh?
The examples I showed you are nearly identical to that mybb one. So I don't know what more you want. It is, however, completely customizable.
That tutorial predates AF and you'd be better off starting with AF as a base rather than starting from scratch with that.

........
Yes, Mybb is nice, it has integrated ajax response but this can be easily done by a drupal module.
That apart I am not sure what extra feature it has, how good tagging or taxonomy it has.
The most important thing it is lacking is a Social Profile of the users, the profile page which is the most happening thing these days seems to be a lot underdeveloped there. And sooner or later you are going to need it along with your forum.
If you badly need some integration you can either post your needs featurewise here as well as there.
Advanced forum, actually opens up a lot more opportunity which you may not realise now :)
I believe a MYBB integration
I believe a MYBB integration is in the works, but it has made 0 progress for months... It seems like it needs fresh developers to take on the task.
Project/Module page
User axel created this project 8 month ago: http://drupal.org/project/mybb
I tried to contact him, but he didnt answer my mails and messages.
I'd really appreciate it if someone restarted this imo really important project.
I agree. It would be a great
I agree. It would be a great project.
Why not to use the Drupal's
Why not to use the Drupal's one instead and add different modules to have a full forum package as nothing will be integrated the same way.
