DrupalCon Chicago

I just spent an hour and a half helping Alan update all the old CVS application issues with info about the git migration, and was chatting here and there with him about how to better support people wanting to get involved in the community. It's not the first time we've chatted about this, over time with all the discussions about how to deal with the CVS application queue workflows, new git workflows, etc. He's not only contributed a lot to Drupal's mapping tools, but he's also been one of the main CVS application reviewers (and there are not many of them!)

He's got an online Drupal resume at http://zzolo.org/drupal for more details, but some highlights:

  • Big contributor to mapping modules, most notably OpenLayers OpenLayers.
  • Maintains or co-maintains 9 modules on Drupal.org.
  • Has done lots of mapping sessions and BOFs at DrupalCons and camps.
  • Lover of coding standards and reviewer of CVS applications, as well as helping guide the improvements to the process.
  • Has worked for the Chicago Tech Co-operative and is currently participating in Code for America.
  • Great supporter and proponent of Open Source.

I'm sure there's far more than I know and could dig up in a few minutes on the internets, but Alan is certainly a fellow Drupal "community gardener", and cares a lot about making this a welcoming and supportive environment to others, especially new people in the community.

And for that, I nominate thee for the Community Spotlight! Can I get a witness? ;)

In addition to all the things Ariane mentioned, Alan is always making Drupal events happen wherever he lives. For example, in the Twin Cities where he hosted the first Drupal Happy Hour and worked on Drupal Daze with mndonx (way back in the day.) And when he went to Geneva, he tried to help get their group there to also be more active.

He is an active proponent of documentation and tidy code. Mainly because these two things are part of what make it possible for new people to interact with the Drupal contributed codebase more easily. If he sees barriers, he will do what he can to try to minimize them.

Alan rocks.

Alan gets a huge +1 from me.

I sat in on his BoF at DrupalCon Copenhagen on how to review CVS applications, and it was super informative and inspiring.

And I love what zzolo is doing with OpenLayers. He's helped us with getting an OpenLayers map of conferences and events on Usecod.com too (map is not online yet; we still have more work to do).

One more reason: http://groups.drupal.org/code-review Code Review CHAMPION!!!!!!!

Alan is an extremely conscientious, kind, and compassionate member of our community, who takes the responsibility of mentoring new contributors via the new module application review process very seriously.

Alan has really stepped up into a leadership role around the review process, helping not only to shepherd new contributors through it, but also to help build a team of people to help do the same. And while he and I have had disagreements around aspects of said process, there is no doubt in my mind that Alan is working for a stronger, safer, more knowledgeable community.

Thanks, Alan, for all that you do, and keep rocking Code For America. :D Awesome!
