For anyone interested here: I moved the "Query Extender" patches as a separated module here: https://www.drupal.org/sandbox/thepanz/2566785, thus not requiring the search_api module to be patched, nor this module to expose additional code/hooks.
My module simply re-uses existing Processors allowing them to be configured and executed per-query.

I am currently using it with search_api_grouping module and works fine (as for my setup and needs).
Give it a try :)
