Video Tutorial on "How to use Drupal" needed!!!

askme - December 20, 2005 - 04:36

Here is my request of suggestion that, if Drupal lovers can make site like--http://www.mambotutorials.com/ for Drupal itself where new Drupal users like me can learn the basic of making website using Drupal in a easy and painless way. I hope this will help many of us and same time reduces the load on this forum.
I hope my voice will be heard here.

Thanks

er..

ultraBoy - December 20, 2005 - 08:04

you mean, we should help that new-generation of drupal administrators who can not read?

ultraBoy I can Read and

askme - December 20, 2005 - 10:13

ultraBoy I can Read and Write too, so that people like you can read and reply. Here I am talking how to make life easier. How to do things in easy way. Let you remind- A picture worth thousands of words.

and... did you try reading

ultraBoy - December 20, 2005 - 11:11

and... did you try reading handbooks ?

Seems like many things (except the simplest) related to CMSs are not possible to show in videos. And, software changes rapidly over time, so are YOU ready to re-render video accordingly to the least changes in Drupal?

We are looking forward to

Uhm.. the video would reduce

jadwigo - December 20, 2005 - 09:39

Uhm.. the video would reduce the load on the forum.. maybe, but the load on the servers is another story.

But then again, it seems that video walktroughs of installing software are what people want.

Anyone know of a good software package to make those video's

SnagIT

ultraBoy - December 20, 2005 - 11:18

SnagIT seems to be one of the best choises. But... as it was already said... what for do we need those members who can not read documentation about very simple thing - just installing this CMS?

not everybody picks up

jadwigo - December 20, 2005 - 12:47

not everybody picks up information from reading easily, many people are more visually oriented...

and why would we not want new users?

Oh.. and I don't believe installing drupal is very simple, nor should it be. You still need to go trough some requirements (like checking if you have the right server, php, database, database account...) and go trough the installations steps where you create a database, upload the source, modify the settings, create users, configure the site, creating content - before you've installed a new drupal site.
Especially for creating users and content, video's might benefit a lot of people.

I think a video would be

sym - December 20, 2005 - 13:11

I think a video would be good for showing off what drupal can do - but not for how to install. You can't cover everyones server set up and fix all problems with a video, you need to come to a forum or handbook like this if you have problems.

I saw a Ruby video a few months ago and it made be very interested indeed. I've not looked in to it yet, but I keep remembering the video - I wouldn't have done that with a forum.

Good idea

FabriceV - December 20, 2005 - 20:07

Dear Mr,

Your idea is good. It is used in numerous educational institutions simply because it helps some people learning better and faster. Of course, it is possible a not enough complex idea to some Drupal users.

Nevertheless, it's really difficult to use video on server. Too much load. Furthermore video is generally inappropriate to software training. The rhythm of action on video is constraint. Using a flash presentation, learners can adjust to their own rhythm. My experience is that you can have the advantage of video (direct visual representation of action and environment) with visual comments each time it's necessary, visual steps... Audio comment can be added, but they don't preserve the server. Their interest is more to preserve and direct the attention rather than be informative.

Thus, I suggest the use of flash presentation. Rather than commercial software, you can use Wink (freeware on WXP and Linux), a tutorial and presentation creation software. You will find on the homepage, a short demo that show how simply and useful can be such kind of support.

Sincerely

I actually have consideret

netbjarne - December 22, 2005 - 14:49

I actually have consideret to make a installation video.. Having installed a bunch of cms'es, the procedure quickly gets repetetive: ftp upload files, change some folder rights, edit a configuration text file, run a sql script to create a database. Its very common, and I can configure a drupal website in matter of minutes.

However, for newbies, the task may seem overwhelming. A video giving an introduction to the procedure, may help people realize, that an installation is not that big a deal after all.

All that is needed, is a headset/microphone and a screen capturing tool. I like camtasia, but even the free microsoft windows media encoder toolkit will do.

Before dries posts another "we are looking forward to your contribution", i must admit that I'm not neative english speaking.

That does not mean that I'm not willing to make a video, as a proof of concept :-)

+1 for this addition

bradlis7 - March 12, 2006 - 00:02

I think this is a great idea, and I'd like to see it become a part of drupal. A lot of people are visual learners. I can learn more by watching a tutorial than I can by reading.

I've got up a shockwave tutorial up for posting an article on my site at http://churchofchristnet.net/files/createarticle.htm. I used Wink, thanks to FabriceV's recommendation. It takes a while to get cleaned up like it should be, but if someone has the time to commit to this, I say do it.

+1 to this

wellsy - March 12, 2006 - 03:29

a video tutorial would be a very good resource.

It may help hundreds (if not thousands) of new drupal users begin with much less help required from these forums.

So when thousands of new drupal users may eventually lead to possibly hundreds of people who are looking for paid assistance to add high level enhancements to their basic drupal install - the community of professionals here wins-yes?

IMO some of the comments above do little to encourage someone with the skills, time and resources to bother to produce such a useful resource for the community here.

ANd we're waiting for

sepeck - March 12, 2006 - 04:50

ANd we're waiting for someone with the software, time and willingness to do this. It's a great idea. Now someone needs to do it. As the regular contributors are somewhat buried in the work they are doing now we are really thinking that someone who brings up the idea needs to also show up with the work.

We are not against ideas here. We have a lot of ideas ourself. We have a significant lack of people that show up willing to actually do the work.

so post a notice on the front page

wellsy - March 12, 2006 - 07:06

make it well written and full of positive reinforcements

make a nice banner ad like the security one, etc

turn it into a project and try to attract a group maybe

OR what about asking a few of the drupal developers (who are not busy with actual drupal platform development and who may have a vested interest in seeing the use of drupal increase rapidly) for some help

don't just make the above negative comments which will only turn possible contributors off completely because it really is a great idea

ARG!

sepeck - March 12, 2006 - 07:18

I did not make a negative comment. No where in my post was a negative comment! I was attempting to explain why no one has done this. It is not a new idea. It has been mentioned several times by people in the last two years. A lot of us would like to see it. We'd love to see it. It probably needs to be someone new. A lot of times it is mentioned and the ones who say they'll do it don't.

You are also opertating under an assumption that there is an organization of 'Drupal developers'. THere is not. THere are people who use and work with Drupal. Many of them are developers of various levels, but if you use Drupal, you are somewhat of a Drupal developer. There are no ranks here. There are virtually no committees or groups except those that form on the fly to solve an issue.

So, do you volunteer to coordinate this effort? If so, please start a forum topic or detail a post in this one. Please give an initial breakdown of the video's you'd like to see and start signing people up to do this. Like the OSWD forum post theme conversion.

If you take the lead in actually getting this done, then you to can become a recognized name here. Please, I am not joking. Be the one to start coordinating this effort. We are seriously short of people who actually produce work that can be shared.

the negative comments were not yours

wellsy - March 12, 2006 - 07:32

sorry if you were thinking that but I see how it looked that way...damm text forum conversation can be problematic

they were at the first answer and a few below from

ultraBoy and killes

If I knew anything at all about video production I may get involved but I do not have the skills or the time to coordinate such an effort...sorry

I will have a go at adding more handbook pages when I see an area/areas where I think I can help and I will continue trying to help others in this forum

Sorry...but I will not just sit back and read some of the comments and answers made to new people who have asked genuine questions and let them go by without making some sort of comment.

IMHO there should be an official moderator here who is non-biased towards any particular drupal user group

wellsy

orchidsonline.com.au

Now that is a stellar suggestion

REEP - March 12, 2006 - 08:33

An unbias moderator would be an awesome move foreward.

Because otherwise us newbies will always get shot up by so called "friendly" veteran fire.

Many replies in here are antaganistic intimdating and just down right discouraging to new comers but when they reply in kind there is always shock and apall and then they get accused of having a chip and threatened with being banned.

Go figure.

Now I have video production skills but getting past these well how can I say this gently...

"well thought out" return post from SOME people....

Make its well you know D.R.U.P.A.L.

The term troll is highly subjective.

When you focus on the poster and not the post your vision is blurry at best.

if you have the skills and the time

then I would heartily recommend you take this project on.

If someone else is able to assist please let them come forward.

I might be able to do this in the summer

rickvug - March 24, 2006 - 10:49

My boss at work (a design and development firm) currently has a to do posted for us to create end user training videos for our clients. He's a bit new to open source and creative commons style contirbutions, but I'll try to get the videos GPL'ed and construct a quick site out of it.

Maybe I could sell it to him business wise as an investment, as it could cause other companies to pitch in as well. Lullabot.com and a few others already host screen casts.

This post is in my tracker, I'll let you know how this works out in the summer.

upload on YouTube...

askme - November 14, 2008 - 21:54

If you feel that there will be load on server-as mentioned by few.. why not create a YouTube community for Drupal and upload all those video tutorials... siteShow and rest...
