favicon problems

this is silly, but annoying. i put my custom favicon in my theme folder (/sites/all/themes/ldv/favicon.ico) and updated the path under the themes setting. nothing. i tried clearing the theme cache on the server. still nothing. i checked the html source, and the path was correct. then i tried letting drupal upload my favicon. it put the icon in /files/ldv_favicon.ico. worked fine. but i'd prefer for the favicon to be in the theme folder (since it seems like it would be best there).

any idea why my favicon isn't loading, even though the path to it is correct? should i try naming it something other than favicon?
